The 42-room Hiberia Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl option with an excellent location in the historic center of Rome. Numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and major attractions are within walking distance, and the bus and train stations are nearby as well. Traditionally styled rooms and suites all feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, but some are cramped (as are bathrooms). Suites offer more space, and some have furnished terraces with nice city views. All could use a little updating, however. A free breakfast buffet with hot and cold items is served daily, and there's a little bar in the lobby as well. With its prime location and reasonable rates, this place stays filled much of the time. For rooms that are a bit more attractive, check out the Comfort Hotel Bolivar instead.
Scene
Family-run historic hotel with traditional style that's a great base for exploring
This little family-run hotel is housed in a four-story building dating back to the 1700s. It shows some historic charm once inside as well -- ornate molding and high arched ceilings provide plenty of character, and lots of potted plants add a homey touch. Guests especially appreciate the cozy bar in the lobby, which is open 24/7. The overall vibe is laid-back, though this isn't really the kind of place one would hang out day and night. Instead, it's a reliable base to explore the city. With its central location and reasonable rates, it attracts all sorts of travelers, though most are couples and families.
Location
In the middle of Rione Trevi area, a seven-minute walk to the Trevi Fountain
This hotel is located in Rome's lively historic center, the Rione Trevi, a three-minute walk from the Quirinale Palace and the Bank of Italy headquarters. This area is filled with many shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes, making it a lively place to bed down while in town. The Trevi Fountain and Piazza Venezia can both be reached in less than 10 minutes on foot, as can Via Nazionale (one of the main shopping streets of Rome). Both the Pantheon and the Colosseum are a 15-minute walk from the hotel, and metro and bus stops are close by for getting to attractions farther afield. Despite its being a low-traffic area, the area is chaotic and noisy. Expect a 35-minute drive to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, or just under an hour by public transportation.
Rooms
Traditional rooms with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, electric kettles, and minibars
Rooms here are offered as singles, doubles, triples, or quadruples. Some are so small, though, that there's barely room to walk around. The style is traditional Italian, with medium-toned wood furniture, marble tabletops, period molding, traditional gold-framed art on beige walls, and rugs atop tile floors. Old-style bedspreads are a bit dated, and on the whole the look is a bit tired. Standard features include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, electric kettles, and safes. Compact bathrooms are tiled and offer bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries. Some have showers only, and others have shower/tub combos. Some rooms have odd configurations with a sink in the room and the toilet and shower outside the room. Robes and slippers are provided. Some rooms have nice city views, but others look out onto the street or sides of adjacent buildings. Suites are larger, with separate bedrooms, and they have inlay parquet floors, fancier furniture, and frescoes on the ceilings. Some can sleep four, which makes them better suited for families. Some suites have terraces furnished with a table and chairs, and decorated with potted plants.
Features
Free breakfast buffet, room service, lobby bar, free Wi-Fi, pet-friendly
This little hotel doesn't offer much in the way of features. A free American-style breakfast buffet with hot-and-cold items is served daily in a cozy breakfast room. Damask tablecloths cover the tables, and period detailing includes molding, columns, and arched entrance ways. There's also a little bar in the lobby with a few bar stools and a curved banquette in front of a large mural depicting an Italian scene. Room service is available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and dogs and cats are allowed at no charge.
