A barebones, no-frills hotel? A safe and well-maintained youth hostel? Depending on how you look at the 35-room Foresteria Roma, it could fit either of these descriptions. Rooms are as minimal as can be, but are updated, clean, and quieter than one might expect. Given Foresteria’s location in the San Lorenzo district (not far from Termini Station), it can be seen as an incredible value for travelers on a budget. The socially conscious will appreciate staying here: The hotel is run by The Salvation Army, and a large percentage of its profits go towards charities benefiting the poor.
Scene
A no-frills hostel ambiance that’s well-suited for unfussy travelers
The Foresteria Roma doesn't rely on bells and whistles. Besides the clean rooms, the hotel provides a simple lobby and back courtyard. The staff is routinely noted for its friendliness and courtesy. Some young travelers may find it harder to meet other guests due to the lack of common areas.
Location
Located in San Lorenzo, a popular student area near Termini Station
Foresteria is located in Rome’s San Lorenzo district, an up-and-coming area that's popular with a young, local crowd, including students from nearby Sapienza University. It's full of restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops, but there are no popular tourist sights within walking distance. It's a 20-minute walk to Termini Station, but there is tram service is in the immediate vicinity.
Rooms
Well-maintained, basic digs
The Foresteria Roma keeps its rooms clean and well-maintained. Twin beds are standard in almost all rooms and furnishings in the space are basic; the flat-screen TVs and bathroom fixtures, however, are up-to-date. Beware that rooms for larger groups can get pretty cramped with extra twin beds cluttering up the layout.
Features
Laundry, parking, and Wi-Fi as well as a women's-only floor
Besides a communal laundry, services for dry cleaning, free breakfast, and Wi-Fi, there’s a parking lot for guests -- practically unheard of for Rome. There’s also a women’s-only floor called La Casa di Alice, which has single rooms with a shared bathroom in the hallway; it may appeal to young female travelers.
