The Duke Hotel is a 78-room upscale hotel in a calm, affluent residential area of Rome. Spacious rooms have plenty of natural light and flat-screen TVs, but decor falls a bit short of what one expects from a four-pearl property. The hotel is far from the tourist sights but offers a free shuttle service to the city center for guests. It’s more affordable than centrally located hotels in this pearl category, making it ideal for travelers looking to save by staying outside of the tourist action.
Scene
Classic, elegant, and calm, much like its surrounding neighborhood
The vibe of the Duke could be summed up in the same way you might describe the surrounding neighborhood: classic, elegant, and calm. True, some of the decor looks a bit dated, but there is a restaurant with well-executed food (albeit slightly pricey) as well as a bar area for guests. It attracts a range of guests, including romantic couples, young families, and business travelers.
Location
On a quiet street in a sleepy, affluent residential area of Rome
The Duke Hotel is located on a side street in Parioli, an affluent residential area of Rome. The area is less bustling and has much less noise pollution than the nearby city center. The drawback to this is that there aren't a lot of shopping or dining options in the immediate vicinity (although the hotel offers guests a free shuttle to and from the city center). The Villa Borghese gardens and Galleria Borghese are about a 20-minute walk away.
Rooms
Spacious, functional rooms, many with balconies
The room decor is a bit underwhelming for a four-pearl property; it's homey, with cheerful red or green fabrics, but not stylish and slightly dated. Still, the rooms are very spacious and flooded with natural light. They offer flat-screen TVs, balconies (in many), ample closet space (some even have walk-in wardrobes) and big bathrooms. Connecting rooms are available for families.
Features
Free shuttles to the city center
The Duke offers free shuttles to and from the city center, every day from morning 'til late night, which is crucial given the hotel's location in a sleepy residential neighborhood. The shuttle isn't huge, though, so guests are advised to book in advance. The hotel restaurant serves modest but well-executed food, and the Polo Lounge Bar has comfy couches, a fireplace, and a colored glass dome in the ceiling. The free breakfast buffet includes cereals, meats, fruit, pastries, and even Prosecco. Though there is no fitness center, guests receive discounted vouchers (and free transportation) to one nearby.
