Bottom Line

The 292-room Cicerone Hotel is a mid-range property in the Prati district of Rome within a 20-minute walk of both
the Vatican and the Spanish Steps. Some of the hotel’s rooms have dated elements -- including carpets and curtains -- but the property is undergoing renovations to freshen up these spaces. There are some nice freebies here, including Wi-Fi, minibars, and a buffet breakfast all included in the room rate. There’s also a polished restaurant
on-site as well as a classy bar and an inviting terrace with lounge furniture. Guests looking for more charm should compare rates with Visconti Palace, a nearby upper-middle-range property with a roof terrace.

Scene

Classic mid-range hotel with some dated decor catering to tour groups

The Cicerone Hotel is set in a large
building with an attractive revolving glass door at the entrance. Inside, the lobby is a classic space with marble floors and brass
trim lining the top and bottom of the front desk. There are several bright spaces in the lobby to relax on simple couches and chairs. The hotel caters to tour
groups, meaning that common areas such as the breakfast room can get busy at popular times. An
open-air annex breakfast room with AstroTurf flooring offers a covered place to
dine alfresco, while a terrace with white patio furniture gives a sunny spot to linger. The hotel has a lovely, curved
bar covered in mosaic tiles where guests can order a cocktail to enjoy in the
classy seating area with pale yellow chairs and brown couches near large, glass
windows. This property has more appeal in its common areas than in the dated rooms, but still attracts both leisure travelers for its location and some business travelers for its variety of meeting spaces.

Location

In the Prati district within walking distance to Vatican City

This hotel is centrally
located in Rome's Prati district, a commercial and residential area of Rome with
plenty of offices, restaurants, cafes, and bars. Castel Sant'Angelo and the Palace
of Justice are less than a 10-minute walk away, and Vatican City, where the Sistine
Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica are located, is within a 20-minute walk. The
Spanish Steps and the Pantheon are also within a 20-minute walk. The nearest
metro stop, Lepanto, is an eight-minute walk away. The airport is around
a half-hour drive away, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Spacious, classic rooms with free minibars, but some are in need of an update

Rooms at the Cicerone Hotel vary in decor -- more recently
updated Superior Rooms have nice wooden floors and white linens with red bed runners, while
more dated Standard Rooms have green carpeting and mustard yellow curtains that need a
refresh. Rooms are spacious, though, and free minibars with soda and water are a
nice perk. Small flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi also come standard. Some bathrooms have small,
corner stall showers, while others have shower/tub combos. Magnifying mirrors and
generous amenity kits are a nice touch. Superior Rooms also have the addition of electric kettles, while Suites have added amenities such as fresh fruit and sweets. This hotel is currently in the process of updating the dated rooms.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, restaurant, and attractive cocktail bar plus free Wi-Fi

The Cicerone Hotel offers a free
breakfast buffet including pastries, fruit, and cold cuts. There’s an open-air
dining room as well as a patio available for dining, which provides a comfy place to relax outdoors during good weather. The hotel also has a polished restaurant with white tablecloths serving Italian and international cuisine as well as a classy cocktail bar that serves
brunch. Meeting rooms are available for private events, and garage parking is
offered for a fee. Small pets are welcome for free. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
