The expression “when in Rome …” truly applies at La Duchessa, given that it is a budget-friendly, small bed and breakfast in a residential apartment complex outside of the city center. With a beautiful park within walking distance and reliable trams taking visitors to the city center in 20 minutes or less, this warm home with three guest rooms isn't a great value when compared with hotels right in the city center, but it is a great choice for travelers who want to live as the Romans do, if only for a few days.
Scene
Vibrantly colored apartment with airy terrace
The three-unit Duchessa is possibly the smallest bed and breakfast in Rome, but also among the nicest. It's situated in a multi-story apartment building. It has Double and Triple Rooms with balconies, and a Single Room with a balcony and bathroom across the hall. There's a small breakfast room with lovely terrace overlooking the neighborhood, and a kitchen with three double tables, where breakfast is served. Guests are allowed to use the kitchen facilities. The property is immaculate and painted bright lime-green, pink, orange, and blue. It's adorned with original paintings by a local artist who is friends with the owners. Kids are welcome, but most guests are couples.
Location
In a quiet residential area, away from the city
The Duchessa is located in Monteverde, northwest of the center of Rome, near the Janiculum Hill, a quiet residential area. The serene Villa Doria Pamphili, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Rome, is a 10-minute walk away, and Rome's historic center can be reached via several trams. Tram No. 8 is two blocks from the front door, about a five-minute walk, and comes every few minutes, taking guests to the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and other major attractions within 25 minutes. The Trastevere Train Station is three tram stops away, from which the airport can be reached in 30 minutes. There are several popular restaurants within a 15-minute walk.
Rooms
Cute, bright, and welcoming
There are only three guest rooms at La Duchessa, and they are all cute, clean, and vibrantly painted. The Single Room has a twin-size bed and no en-suite bathroom (it's across the hall) but does have a small balcony overlooking the neighborhood. The Double Room and Triple Room (with a queen-size bed and a twin) are equally bright, with private bathrooms, showers, and toilets. Towels are rolled neatly on the bed, just as they might be if staying at a friend’s house. Each room has a small flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, and lovely original paintings by local artist Giuliano Gentile.
Features
Large breakfasts, kitchen access, and free Wi-Fi
The owners prepare a large breakfast every morning, including fresh warm croissants, locally made cheese, and yogurt. Guests can use the kitchen, refrigerator, and microwave, and enjoy drinks and snacks throughout their stay. The owners are happy to recommend restaurants and arrange for taxis. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Parking isn't provided and it can be difficult to locate a space in the neighborhood.
