Bottom Line

Villa Amor is a mid-range boutique hotel that consists of privately owned villas overlooking the bay of Sayulita. Prices are on the high side, especially when you consider there's no private beach access  or TVs in the villas. What you're paying for here are the gorgeous views and almost unbeatable location that feels secluded, but is nonetheless just next to the beaches and bohemian village of Sayulita. Villas are privately owned, so each is decorated individually. The best ones have cavernous bathrooms, panoramic ocean views, and privae plunge pools -- none of them have TVs or phones, and Wi-Fi can be spotty. Children are welcome, but steep steps and few amenities draw couples looking for romance or families with older kids.

Scene

Jungle grounds overlooking the Bay of Sayulita

Scene Villa Amor

Villa Amor doesn't have much in the way of common spaces, though the property has added a few features since our visit, including a pool and yoga center. The reception desk is a makeshift area made up of a desk underneath an open-air thatch roof, located next to the road. The villas are located in two-story buildings, some of them up steep hills. Golf carts are more common than cars. Overall, the vibe is definitely bohemian and laid-back. Thick, jungle-like landscaping includes palm trees and patches of ferns. Stairways are lined with beautiful tiles. Views of the ocean are some of the best in Sayulita and can be enjoyed from tables and chairs overlooking the water.

Most of the guests here are couples, groups of travelers, or families with older children. Though little ones are more than welcome, steep steps might be a deterrent.

Location

On Sayulita Bay

Location is one of the main selling points at Villa Amor. The property is built directly on the Bay of Sayulita, with sweeping views of a stunning Mexican landscape that includes mountains, sandy beaches, and sparkling blue water. Hills and jungle landscaping feel secluded and private; past guests have described this property as magical. Public beaches, which include restaurants and chair rentals on the sand, are less than a five-minute walk from Villa Amor and the laid-back surfer village of Sayulita Bay is only a few minutes further. It's about a 45-minute drive to Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Airport transfers can be arranged for a fee.

Rooms

Privately-owned villas with some awesome kitchens and bathrooms

Rooms Villa Amor

There are 26 privately-owned villas, though condos would be a better word to describe the units as they aren't stand-alone buildings. Each is decorated, furnished, and equipped a little differently; the best panoramic views of the water come after a steep climb (or golf cart ride) to the villas on top of the hill. Some villas have only basic kitchen facilities like a coffeemaker while others have outdoor plunge pools. The Costa Villa has a truly gorgeous circular kitchen with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, and a thatch roof. Other features include handmade wooden chairs, furnished terraces, worn-looking day beds, and beds surrounded by mosquito nets. Hand-painted floral tiles decorate the arched doorway leading into the cement bathroom with a full bathtub.

Each villa is air-conditioned and has free (spotty) Wi-Fi. None of them have TVs or phones, which can mean a walk down the hill (and then back up) to let the front desk know if you need something.

Features

On-property, but privately owned, restaurant -- and not much else

Features Villa Amor

There are a few features at Villa Amor, and staff is reportedly helpful and responsive. A pool area, added after our visit, includes a dual-level pool with swim-up bar, as well as communal barbecue grills and an open-air yoga studio. An on-site restaurant is privately owned and serves three meals a day, along with cocktails. Staff at the front desk can arrange a myriad of activities from surf lessons, to massages, to zip lining. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, but the signal isn't strong or reliable. Beach towels and paddle boards are provided free of charge.
