Room decor is a tad dated; some rooms lack windows

There isn’t much to do in the local area
A budget hotel in a ritzy resort area, Hotel Meson de Mita offers great value in a prime location. This colorful property has 16 rooms with varied layouts, but the decor could benefit from a little updating. Meson de Mita has a small pool with thatched roof palapas and a hammock-strung pergola with a sandy floor. The hotel is located in front of a tiny beach, behind a popular local restaurant, but the beach isn’t anywhere you’d really want to swim. With neighbors like the Four Seasons, The St. Regis, and the W, there aren’t many other affordable hotels in the area. Budget travelers should head north to San Pancho, where cute boutiques like Hotel Casa San Pancho and Hotel Cielo Rojo are slightly pricier, but have nicer rooms and amenities.
Scene
A budget-friendly hotel with plenty of local color
Hotel Meson de Mita is a laid-back property with lots of colorful Mexican flair. The hotel’s tangerine-colored entrance gives way to an open-air lobby lined with Acapulco chairs and vibrant locally made pottery. Floral print pillows add personality, but the piece-de-resistance is the hanging swing in the adjacent sitting room. The front desk is usually staffed with English and Spanish speaking employees, as the hotel sees a fair amount of American, Canadian, and Mexican travelers. The majority of guests stay at Meson de Mita for a night or two, before heading elsewhere along the Riviera Nayarit.
Location
In Punta de Mita, an exclusive resort town north of Nuevo Vallarta
Hotel Meson de Mita is located in Punta de Mita (also written as Punta Mita), an exclusive resort town north of Nuevo Vallarta. Some of Riviera Nayarit’s ritziest resorts — the Four Seasons, The St. Regis, the W — are located in the vicinity, so Meson de Mita’s affordable rates stands out amongst its neighbors. A former fishing village, the town itself is a bit dull, with a few tourist restaurants and a so-so beach. It’s more of a stopover than a destination. The hotel is within walking distance of all Punta de Mita has to offer, and is a 45-minute drive from the international airport in Puerto Vallarta (though times can vary, depending on traffic).
Rooms
Colorful decor, but dated bedspreads are an eyesore
Meson de Mita has the potential to be one of the area’s premiere boutique hotels, but dated room decor keeps it from reaching that distinction. The biggest eyesore could be the striped polyester bedspreads. These aren't the colorful locally made sarapes found at many area hotels, but instead a cheap, mass-produced bed cover you'd expect from an aging all-inclusive. Flimsy wall-mounted headboards, bland tile floors, and faded sofas (in some) lack character, and while most rooms receive lots of natural light during the day, there isn’t sufficient lighting to make them bright at night. Despite these flaws, Meson de Mita’s guest rooms do have some nice details. Boldly colored accent walls continue the lobby’s vibrant look, while bold artwork in some rooms adds much-needed visual interest. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, electronic safes, and bottled water. A few rooms have kitchenettes with large refrigerators and electric stove tops. Bathrooms have showers and small vanities (some with gorgeous hand painted sinks), but no tubs. The hotel provides towels and basic toiletries. Rooms are equipped with one king, one queen, two queen size beds, and some have beautiful outdoor patios with thatched roofs. It should be noted that some of the entry-level Double Rooms do not have windows.
Features
A pool, a so-so beach, and freebies like parking and Wi-Fi
Meson de Mita’s nicest amenity is its pool. This small pool is surrounded by palapa style umbrellas and wooden pergolas that give the area a chill Mexican beach vibe. Two different shades of blue tiles cover the pool's basin creating subtle patterns beneath the water. There’s a shallow area for sunbathing, and a deeper area for swimming. Behind the pool a wooden pergola is strung with white hammocks that guests can use for afternoon siestas. In front of the pool, a wrought-iron gate leads to the beach, where a few dingy lounge chairs are lined up along the hotel’s exterior wall. The beach in front of the hotel isn’t very pretty and isn’t ideal for swimming, considering the adjacent puddle of still water that’s filled with garbage that flows into the ocean. Though it isn’t owned by the hotel, there’s a popular restaurant in front of Meson de Mita that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel is also within walking distance of other bars and restaurants in town. Wi-Fi throughout is free, and guests can park for free in an adjacent parking lot.
