Mi Amor is an intimate, upscale boutique resort on the beach that attracts a primary clientele of vacationing couples. The 17 rooms here have a chic, rustic vibe, and most come with either balconies or private plunge pools. There's also a beach-facing infinity pool as well as a spa and a well-received restaurant serving international cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on French- and Italian-inspired dishes. The hotel is also right on the beach, and while the rocky coastline is beautiful, it's less than ideal for those wanting to swim. Overall, Mi Amor is an excellent option for couples looking for something quiet and romantic, but the intimate vibe is less suited to families. Those with kids in tow may prefer the family-friendly Ana y Jose Charming Hotel & Spa instead.
Scene
Intimate boutique property popular with couples
Popular with vacationing couples, Mi Amor is a quiet, intimate luxury boutique property overlooking a lovely stretch of southern coastline. The semi-open property consists of a number of low-lying one- and two-story structures with white facades accented with reddish-brown wooden beams. The lobby follows a same decor scheme as the exteriors, with wood-paneled walls and a front desk to match plus off-white tile floors. Most of the seating areas are located outside, and there are covered sofas, swing seats, sunbeds, and tables and chairs located throughout the grounds.
Location
In the southern part of Tulum, right on the beach and a short drive into town
Mi Amor is located on the coast of Tulum, just south of the main stretch of hotels on an area of the coast that is more rock than sand. It's about a 10-minute drive to both the Tulum city center and to the area's famous ruins, while Playa del Carmen -- with boats out to Cozumel -- takes about 50 minutes to an hour by car. It's about a 90-minute drive to Cancun International Airport.
Rooms
Rustic-chic rooms with pool, garden, or ocean views, many with balconies or private plunge pools
Mi Amor offers six types of room, largely differentiated by their views. Decor is similar throughout units, with lots of natural-finish wooden floors, trim, and furniture complemented by beige-colored tile and pops of turquoise in the lampshades and on small dining tables. The cheapest rooms at the hotel are the Pool View Rooms. Garden View with Plunge Pool units add -- as the name suggests -- small pools, while Jungle View Rooms and Partial Sea View Rooms have plunge pools in the ground-floor units and balconies off of the upper-floor rooms. The same goes for the Sea View and Sea Front Rooms, and all the Sea Front Rooms add jetted tubs. All rooms come with air-conditioning, bluetooth speakers, Nespresso coffeemakers, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and safes. Bathrooms feature walk-in showers with ceiling-mounted rainfall showerheads, and MALIN+GOETZ toiletries are provided.
Features
Spa, infinity pool, gorgeous coastline (but not great for swimming), and European restaurant
One of Mi Amor's most notable features is its spa which, while not particularly luxurious (it's on the simple side in terms of decor), still offers a great range of massages and other treatments, including facials and baths. There's also a lovely outdoor infinity pool with views of the sea, but it's on the narrow side and doesn't have much space for sunbathing. Guests wanting to tan are better off setting up shop on one of the hotel's lovely deck areas or heading down to the beach, where there are covered sunbeds as well as a few seating areas, plus an exposed platform that gets more sun. While the rocky coastline here is beautiful, there's not much sand to speak of in high tide and it's less than ideal for swimming. Other amenities include the Mi Amor Restaurant by Paul Bentley, which serves European food (with French and Italian influences) at breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Note that it closes for an hour in between each meal service. Parking and hotel-wide Wi-Fi are included in room rates.
