Green Tulum Cabanas & Gardens
is surrounded by stucco walls, and mostly hidden in an unexpected, forested
location. This resort features artistic decor, handcrafted furnishings, and the
earthy appearance of an eco-tourist location. This is not a beachfront
property, and those who want immediate access to beach might prefer other
options, like the Coco Tulum. The rooms and decor here are well-worn, with bathroom fixtures,
linens, and other features that could use an update. However, modern amenities
here include a well-maintained pool and sundeck area, air-conditioning (in some rooms), and free
Wi-Fi at the on-site restaurant and bar. Small groups, families, and
individual travelers who wish to get "away from it all" will enjoy
the feeling of isolation at this small resort.
Scene
Handcrafted decor at this welcoming, family-friendly destination
Green Tulum is composed of a
series of palapa-style villas, featuring memorable design elements, such as
dark wood doors with carved Maya-inspired patterns, and wind chimes made from
polished coconuts. Each building has a porch, featuring tables and chairs handcrafted
from tree trunks, and porch railings incorporate logs and large tree branches.
The on-site restaurant is open-air, with brown and bright blue stone flooring.
All seating is crafted from polished logs, and bright Mayan tapestries hang
from the ceiling. The courtyard contains a pool, which is illuminated by
colored lights at nighttime. A covered sundeck area beside the pool holds
lounge chairs, and white curtains can be pulled shut to provide additional
shade. Green Tulum is operated by a family
that lives on-site, and provides 24 hour service at the reception desk. Management ensures that the environment here is warm and welcoming, and that every guest receives prompt service. The
family dog is friendly, but be forewarned, he likes to jump and sometimes has
dirty paws.
Location
Down a rough dirt road, hidden from view, and five minutes from downtown Tulum
Green Tulum is located off the
main thoroughfare, down a rough dirt road. It is about a 10 minutes' drive to various beaches.
Downtown Tulum, with its shopping and dining opportunities, is only about five
minutes away from the resort by car. The dirt road is a more industrial area,
dotted with parking lots and warehouses. The resort itself is situated in a
forested area, surrounded by stucco walls. Trees and foliage block potentially
unattractive views of an industrial warehouse. This resort is remarkably serene
and quiet, despite its location. Bike rental is available on-site, and bicycling
can be a convenient way to reach downtown Tulum, as the dirt road is not
heavily trafficked.
Rooms
Simple rooms are dark, with a tropical rainforest vibe.
Green Tulum offers a selection
of simply-furnished villas, with playful decorative features such as conch
shell faucets that flow into wood bowls in lieu of conventional sinks. Most
accommodations are completely enclosed with stucco and bamboo walls. The darkly
painted bamboo blocks out much of the natural light. Carvings that decorate
walls and headboards match the style of craftsmanship seen all over the grounds
at Green Tulum. Some rooms are air-conditioned, while other have only ceiling
fans. All rooms feature beds, futon couches, private bathrooms, and porches (some shared) with hammocks. Floors are made of bright blue tile. There are no TVs or closets,
but wardrobes made of bamboo and other natural materials provide storage space. Green Tulum has a Family Cabin that caters to large groups. Some walk-in showers
here have only a wall partition to separate the bathing area from the sink and
toilet area. Bathrooms include packets of fruit-scented bar soap and shampoo
only. These products are presented in sea shell soap dishes. While toilet paper
is provided in all bathrooms, it is of thin, flimsy quality that some guests
might find annoying. Rooms show some wear and tear, and many could do with a
fresh coat of paint. Dated fixtures and decor, such as shower curtains, towels,
and bed linens, would benefit from an update.
Features
Basic amenities are offered, but all all except Wi-Fi and use of the pool cost extra.
This resort has basic offerings,
and all except Wi-Fi and use of the pool cost extra. The good news is, Wi-Fi signals
are decent at the restaurant hotspot. In other areas of the resort, Internet
access is slim to none. Resort staff can connect guests with tours that are
relevant to their personal interests, as well as scuba diving and water-sports
opportunities. Outings and tours are not included in the cost of a stay, and
prices are dependent upon the type of activities selected. The on-site
restaurant serves primarily breakfast and dinner, for added costs, but guests
who would like meals during the day can have those cooked to order as well.
Guests can opt to have their food delivered to the pool area, and poolside
drink service is also available. Bike rental is offered through the resort, and
airport transfers can be arranged, though both services will cost extra. The
reception desk at this resort is staffed 24 hours a day.
