The 227-room Hotel Novo Mundo is a three-pearl option located close to Flamengo Park and its pretty beach. Access to the Gloria Metro station is easy from here, and the property's also within walking distance of a few restaurants, shops, and attractions. Rooms are rather basic, but they feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Some have balconies and exceptional views of Guanabara Bay, but others lack views entirely. A breakfast buffet is free, and dining in the bistro comes with spectacular views. The piano bar attracts crowds with its live music, and there's a fitness center, too. For travelers who want a rooftop pool -- a must in Rio, after all -- check out the similarly priced Hotel Regina nearby, which also adds a steam room.
Scene
Historic hotel that could use a little sprucing up, but suitable for business travelers
This hotel's history goes fairly deep, and it dates back to 1950, when it accommodated soccer players attending the 1950 World Cup. Its location next to the Catete Palace (now the Museum of the Republic), where many Brazilian presidents lived, means that it drew politicians and artists from around the world as well. Unfortunately, its once elegant interiors are looking a little past their prime today and could use a bit of sprucing up. Upholstered sofas and chairs in the lobby are faded and worn in spots, but they are provide a place where guests can take a seat while waiting to head out for the day. There are other spots in the hotel that are better for unwinding, though, including the bistro -- with its sea views -- and the piano bar. The Novo Mundo mostly draws business guests, especially those attending events in the large meeting space, and its proximity to the domestic airport is a plus.
Location
Close to Flamengo Park and its beach, as well as the Gloria Metro and restaurants
This hotel sits right in front of Flamengo Park, a large public park and recreation area that's closed to traffic on Sundays and public holidays. The surrounding area is a mix of residences and businesses, and there are several restaurants and shops within walking distance. Guests can walk to Flamengo Beach in 10 minutes, though keep in mind that this beach is on Guanabara Bay, which is frequently too polluted for a swim. The Gloria Metro station is a five-minute walk from the hotel for reaching other parts of the city. Other nearby attractions include the Museum of the Republic (four-minute walk), the Marina da Gloria (12-minute walk) and the Museum of Modern Art (20-minute walk). Santos Dumont Airport -- the domestic airport -- is about 15 minutes away by car or public transportation, and the Sugar Loaf Cable Car is 20 to 25 minutes away by taxi. Copacabana Beach is about a 15-minute drive away or 30 minutes by public transportation. Plan on a half-hour to reach Rio's international airport by car.
Rooms
Basic rooms with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, some with excellent bay views
Rooms and suites are rather basic and plain, with wood floors, medium-toned wood furniture, and neutral beige color schemes highlighted with touches of red. The white walls are minimally decorated, contributing to the spartan look. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. The air-conditioning isn't always reliable, and can be noisy. Bathrooms are also plain, but have granite countertops, hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries. Some have showers only, and some have whirlpool tubs. Suites and Executive Rooms are much larger and add sofas and chairs in sitting areas. Some have balconies with nice sea or garden views. Higher floors can look out to Sugar Loaf and Corcovado Mountain, home to the landmark Christ the Redeemer statue. However, entry-level rooms have no view at all. Connecting rooms are available for families and groups. Keep in mind that rooms facing the road are likely to pick up traffic noise.
Features
Free breakfast, two restaurants, piano bar, fitness center, 11 meeting rooms, and free Wi-Fi
Given its former status as a destination of sorts, it's no surprise that the hotel has a decent number of features, though the lack of a pool is a let down. Dining options include two restaurants and a piano bar. Flamboyant Restaurant serves a free breakfast buffet with hot and cold selections daily, plus international buffets for special events. Panamera Bistro serves lunch in a casual space with large windows overlooking Guanabara Bay. The Grand Prix Piano Bar is a lively place for drinks, light fare, and occasional live music. Room service is available around-the-clock. Guests working out on cardio and weight training machines in the fitness center are treated to views of the sea through large windows. The nearby park offers tennis, walking paths, and bike rentals. The hotel provides towels for the beach. The hotel's 11 meeting rooms include one space that can accommodate groups of up to 250 people. Parking is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. A computer in the lobby provides internet access for guests.
