The 116-room Hotel Astoria Palace is a simple, mid-range property across the street from Copacabana Beach. It has little in the way of aesthetic character, though does offer great views from the rooftop pool area. The property also offers a fitness center and sauna, which are small but adequate. Guest rooms have dated bedspreads and wood paneling, and come with minibars and flat-screen TVs. The hotel has a bar and restaurant serving three meals daily, including a basic, free breakfast. Wi-Fi is free, though the connection is not consistent.
Scene
Not actually a palace, with a basic style and vaguely corporate feel
A glassy, corporate-like building on the outside, the Hotel Astoria Palace maintains a somewhat expressionless style inside. The lobby has a small seating area, with black and white leather couches across from the reception desk -- which is made of wood and reflective metal, indicative of the hotel's simple, modern style. Despite some livelier touches, such as fresh flowers and the vibrant red painting above a couch, the space is generally plain. Down the hall is a similarly decorated seating area where guests can watch TV. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi in the lobby, so the common space can be crowded with guests. The Astoria Restaurant and bar is lively, if a bit reminiscent of an airport restaurant, with paintings of beach scenes and built-in wood shelves with manicured plants. This property tends to feel quite busy with lots of tourists and some business travelers, though the business center is just a small space with two computers.
Location
Great for beachgoers and tourists
The Hotel Astoria Palace is very convenient for tourists, within walking distance of many shops and restaurants, and across the street from the Copacabana Beach. From many rooms, there are views of Corcovado Mountain -- a 15-minute drive -- and the Christ the Redeemer statue rising at its peak -- about 25 minutes' drive. Central Rio is about 15 minutes away by car, and the international airport is 25 minutes away. While set in a busy part of town, the hotel keeps most rooms in the back of the property, and therefore noise is not an issue.
Rooms
Plain, but clean, with minibars and air-conditioning
The rooms at the Hotel Astoria Palace are not as regal as the name implies. In fact, they are quite plain, with simple wood furniture and wall-paneling, brightly stripped bedding, and space for little else. The half-moon bedside sconces and pale blue accent walls are nice touches, lending some essentialist elegance to an otherwise beachy aesthetic. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Bathrooms are simple and small with faux marble counters and stall showers. Each Standard Room has a double bed, while Triple Rooms have three singles. Deluxe Rooms have two double beds, while Superior Deluxe Rooms are a true upgrade, with fluffy white bedding, small seating areas, larger TVs, and full bathtubs.
Features
Small fitness center and sauna, rooftop pool, free breakfast, and a moderately priced restaurant and bar
The hotel has a small gym with one weight machine, a treadmill, and a bike, all of which are in good condition. It also has a boxy sauna with gray and cream tiling. There's a petite rooftop patio with a small, two-tier pool, which has a hydromassage waterfall and is great for dipping, but rather useless for swimming. Still, a patio lounge chair at sunset might be the most relaxing spot in the hotel. The Astoria Restaurant offers a free, continental breakfast buffet, and then serves a la carte regional cuisine at lunch and dinner. There's also a small bar attached.
