Bottom Line

The Atlantico Copacabana is currently a lower-middle-range hotel undergoing a major renovation to upgrade both the rooms and the public areas by 2016. The hotel will remain open while construction is underway, so be prepared for noise. Currently, the hotel is dated with old-fashioned decor and furniture, and has noticeable wear and tear. The Atlantico has a first floor restaurant that serves breakfast -- included in the room rate -- and a la carte lunch and dinner. The rooftop offers a swimming pool, tiny fitness center, and a steam room. Copacabana Beach is about three blocks from the hotel and there's a metro station across the street.

Scene

Multi-story and dated hotel with a classic lobby

As of this writing, the Atlantico Copacabana Hotel had begun a major renovation expected to be finished before the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, with a modern and fresh look. Currently, there's a large lobby area with Italian inspired statues and artwork. The decor includes Asian-style pots, armchairs, and red or striped sofas. A horse sculpture hangs on the wall. Artificial flowers look a bit tacky. Many of the guests are business travelers, though tourists are here for the low rates and fast access to Copacabana Beach.

Location

Across the street from Sigueira Campos metro station

The Atlantico Copacabana has a convenient Copacabana location that offers residential and commercial conveniences of the area. The hotel is just across the street from the Sigueira Campos metro station so it offers excellent access to safe, efficient, and fast means of transportation in a mega-city that often suffers from monstrous traffic jams. The hotel is located in the corner of Sigueira Campos and Barata Ribeiro streets, the latter being among the busiest streets in Copacabana. The beach is about three long blocks or 10-minutes' walk away. The immediate neighborhood offers the authentic Copacabana scene with bars, restaurants, shops, mini-markets, kiosks, and smaller shopping centers. Laundry shops, banks, and pharmacies are nearby as well. The distance to Ipanema is about 20 to 30 minutes on foot, but busses running south arrive in Ipanema in about five or 10 minutes. The Galeão International Airport is about 30 minutes by taxi.

Rooms

Dated rooms due for renovation

The Atlantico Copacabana began room renovations in March 2015, to be completed in mid-2016. Expect construction noise and a gamble on getting a refurbished room until then. The rooms are quite spacious (to Rio standards) and currently offer ceramic tile floors, and simple, but dated furniture. All rooms have TVs (some come with LCD-TVs), safes, and minibars. Wooden furniture includes a writing desk and an upholstered desk chair. Triple Deluxe Rooms offer a separate lounge area furnished with a sofa, but the room itself feels cramped. The bathrooms are quite small and dated. They come with basic toiletries and hairdryers mounted to the wall. Some feature decorated ceramic wall tiles. The suites offer a fresher and more modern look with spacious bathrooms, a whirlpool tub, and a private sauna.In-room Wi-Fi is available, but there's a charge; past guests have complained about a spotty signal. Noise doesn't seem to be an issues as windows are soundproofed.

Features

Rooftop pool, a fitness center, and a steam room

The Atlantico Copacabana has a lobby level restaurant that serves a free hot buffet breakfast and a la carte meals for lunch and dinner, along with the occasional specialty buffet night. Cocktails are available at the Lobby Bar. The hotel caters to business clients and offers three meeting rooms with an 80 person seating capacity in each. A desktop computer is set up in the lobby and guests may use it for a fee. The hotel features a rooftop area with a small pool, tiny adjacent fitness center, and a steam room. The pool deck is set with sun beds and plastic chairs and tables. Views include the city and mountains in the distance. The fitness center is equipped with two stationary bikes and two treadmills in front of a flat-screen TV. The steam room and the shower area are modern and clean. The front desk staff provides concierge services. Guests may purchase city tours, tickets to football games at the Maracanã stadium, or to samba shows at Ipanema. The hotel offers also laundry service and parking for a fee.
