One of the first hotels catering to cyclists in the area and open since 1997, Hotel Dory is a family-friendly Riccione institution. While its focus is its guided bike tours for all skill levels and the facilities, equipment, and personnel that go along with them, the hotel makes deliberate efforts to cater to all guests, including children. The Dory's kids’ club even has an indoor and outdoor section with supervised staff running different activities each day. The older Standard Rooms are small but affordable while updated units are larger, more stylish, and pricier. Breakfast and dinner buffets are included in booking and guests are plied with unlimited house wine at dinner. The hotel is ideal for a family looking to do some bike riding, but those looking for hang time at a larger pool or spa might look at the numerous other options in Riccione, such as the Hotel Select Suites & Spa.
Scene
Bike hotel with bright interiors and earth tones
A covered veranda greets guests at the entrance of the Dory, which is up a flight of stairs that's part of the property's white nautical exterior. Inside, a basket of apples has a sign in three languages inviting guests to take the fruit. White curtains and an illuminated ceiling brighten the lobby, with oversized sofas in earth tones filling out the space. The surrounding outdoor area can become quite busy, especially in the evening when Riccione nightlife gets going.
Location
On a tight one-way street, less than two blocks from the beach
Located in Riccione on Viale Puccini, the hotel is in an active urban area. The beach and the Adriatic Sea are less than two blocks away, but you have to cross a congested road to get to the seaside boardwalk. Both the train station and Viale Ceccarini's popular stretch of boutique shopping are about a 15-minute walk away. In the center of the Eastern Riviera, Riccione is a major coastal tourist destination with popular beaches and a vibrant nightlife filled with theme parks and discos. It's also a popular cycling destination with paths winding between vineyards and castles along cobbled streets. By car, the hotel is four hours to Rome, under three hours to Venice, and less than 10 minutes to Federico Fellini International Airport.
Rooms
Some dated rooms feel like they belong to another hotel, though other units have flashy, updated decor
Hotel Dory confesses upfront that their older Standard Rooms are in need of updates. The decor consists of homey yellow wallpaper and either red carpet or bland, tiled floors. Most have private balconies, but they range in size from small to tiny to standing-room only. The quaint older rooms are a world apart from the flashy, renovated Superior Rooms and suites. These units feature dark wood floors and modern decor in monochromatic tones, with contrasting color accents on walls or select pieces of designer furniture. Each bathroom has a walk-in shower and bidet. Mini-fridges, in-room safes, and free Wi-Fi are standard for all rooms. Mini-Apartment options are also offered off-site, but are still close to main property.
Features
Full spa, extensive bike facilities, and family-friendly activities
The buffet-style restaurant specializes in Romagna cuisine with free breakfast and dinner buffets and unlimited house wine at dinner. There's also a separate kids' restaurant. Apart from the daily bike tours, non-biking activities include cooking lessons and Nordic walking. The Dory also has a small boat that guests can rent -- with a skipper -- for daytime excursions. For children, there's a supervised indoor/outdoor kids’ club and game room. The staff also gives a weekly tour of the hotel's off-site farmhouse, complete with vinegar cellar, where the restaurant gets much of its produce. The outdoor pool deck is tiny and the pool itself is small, but still equipped with playful water jets and sprinklers which, if nothing else, keeps children busy. There’s an indoor hot tub adjacent to the pool through a wall of windows. The on-site spa is on the small side too, but packs in fitness equipment, a sauna, and a Turkish bath with the requisite treatment rooms. A small garage alleviates some of the neighborhood's parking problems, but comes with a fee.
