Pool areas are crowded, with competition for sunbeds
The 371-room Sunshine Vacation Club Rhodes is an all-inclusive resort located on the beach in northwest Rhodes. There are activities for all ages, with an energetic (and loud) animation team working hard to create fun; travelers seeking quiet time in the sun may want to stay elsewhere, as the noise and commotion begins early and lasts until late in the evening (though one of the several pools is a designated quiet pool). Rooms are spacious, but the decor is dated -- think mirrored closet doors –- and worn around the edges, though balconies are appealing.
Scene
All-inclusive, beachfront resort
The large lobby at Sunshine Vacation Club Rhodes includes a mishmash of furniture and styles, such as white leather couches, dated fabric sofas, a glass table on a base resembling Greek columns, reproduction reliefs, and a section of ceiling painted like the sky. The vibe is super casual. This all-inclusive hotel draws many families, so the atmosphere is often noisy and the pools can get quite crowded.
Location
Between the airport and the town of Rhodes, on the beach
The Sunshine Vacation Club is located between the town of Rhodes and the airport, which is a 20-minute drive away. There are many historic sites nearby, including the Acropolis of Rhodes and the Temple of Apollo, and the ancient town of Ialyssos, which is within walking distance of the resort. The local bus stops just outside the hotel entrance, and is an easy way for tourists to see the island. It is right on the beach, which is a combination of pebbles and sand; guests may want to bring water shoes for wading.
Rooms
Spacious, air-conditioned rooms with balconies overlooking the pool
Rooms at the Sunshine Vacation Club are spacious and air-conditioned, with sofa beds, safes, and flat-screen TVs. All rooms have balconies facing the pool, where there is activity from early morning through midnight. Guests who are sensitive to noise may want to request rooms farther away from the center of things. Family rooms have small kitchenettes with two burner cooktops and mini-fridges, but there are no utensils, dishes, or cooking pots in the units. Decor is basic and somewhat dated; some rooms are more recently refurbished. Some guests have mentioned that room cleanliness could be improved.
Features
Pools, free parking, fitness center, and plenty of activities
The Sunshine Vacation Club offers plenty of activities for all ages, including a beach volleyball court, bicycle tours, scuba lessons, tennis, and miniature golf. Evening entertainment includes live music, Greek dancing (with lessons), musicals, and other performances. The fitness center is in a pavilion, open on the sides -- a nice feeling, with a larger than usual number of cardio machines for a hotel gym. There is a minimart on-site for souvenirs and necessities, and parking is free, but limited, and first come, first serve. The full-service spa offers a wide array of massage, bodywork, beauty treatments, and hydrotherapy. There is lots of activity from morning to night in the large pool areas, on the beach, and in the resort's three bars. The resort is frequently crowded, which creates competition for sunbed space, with guests rising at the crack of dawn to reserve a shady spot, then, at peak mealtimes, storming the buffet. The main restaurant, Dionysos, serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with theme nights, in a large dining room with tavern style decorative accents and a bottle of ouzo at the coffee station. Two a la carte restaurants serve dinner only. Zorba's Taverna offers Greek cuisine, and Mamma Mia specializes in Italian, but both serve the same food as the buffet, only edited. The pool bars are relaxed, with seats in sun or shade, and guests wearing bathing suits. Style is not the focus here, but guests in the mood to party and socialize will be satisfied.
