Summer Memories Hotel Apartments

Spirit is strong at the Summer Memories Apartments, where a mostly British crowd form a loyal following. They return for the great location and easygoing atmosphere (at affordable prices). Unlike often poorly maintained budget properties, standards here are high. Terra-cotta paths divide neatly trimmed hedges around the hotel's two stories, and though humble, this long-standing establishment is run with pride. The lobby's peach-accented walls, white wicker seating, and floral decor are homey, and poolside dining terraces amid flowers are typically Mediterranean. Loungers around the pool are somewhat cramped, but always available, as are staff. Friendly pool table competitions and bi-weekly karaoke nights add some lively activity, though there isn't much for little ones aside from the kiddy pool. Note, there are no elevators, but ground-level rooms are available. Additionally, cats roam the property.

The hotel's side-street location affords tranquility, although Pefkos' main street is just a two-minute walk. Bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and shops here are plentiful. Though lively, this small town isn't rowdy. The nearest beach is an eight-minute walk, and the main Pefkos Beach is a few minutes farther. Golden sands here overlook turquoise-blue waters against rugged cliff backdrops, and both are great for swimming. Many guests stay put in Pefkos, although a vehicle here is handy. Guests without one can still reach nearby towns with reasonably priced taxis or a bus, a five-minute walk from the hotel. Famous for its Acropolis, Lindos is an eight-minute drive. Busier Rhodes is 55 minutes by car. Both can be reached by bus, although it doesn't run to Rhodes International Airport, which is an hour's drive.

Homey, basic rooms with clean-tiled floors and wooden furniture warmly accented by russet-colored bedspreads and drapes. Lower-category Studios are 323 square feet (30 square meters) and fit two people, while larger One- and Two-bedroom Apartments can sleep four to five. Desks come standard, and beds are twins pushed together (common for the region). Kitchenettes have electric hobs, kettles, microwaves, mini-fridges, sinks, and a limited supply of cookware. White and opal-tiled bathrooms are tired, but sufficient, with either shower cubicles or shower/tub combos. Hairdryers and towels are provided, but note, toiletries are not. Large sliding glass doors flood rooms with natural daylight and open onto private terraces or balconies; though tables and chairs here are plastic, pool or countryside views are lovely. Upgraded Apartments with jetted tubs have wraparound balconies guaranteeing sea vistas. Rooms can be fitted with cribs for free. Note that there are no TVs and charges apply for safes and AC (except for those booked directly through hotel website), but Wi-Fi is free.

The outdoor pool is the property's focal point. Though not the largest, it's great for cooling off, and kids get their own one. Surrounding plastic loungers are padded, and parasols in grays and yellows provide shade. The space is tightly packed, but a spot is always available. The adjacent bar has sports screens and ample seating. Another outdoor spot is smartly outfitted white wicker chairs topped by fuchsia-striped cushions, sundials on exposed stone, and lovely cascading bougainvillea. Well-priced cooked English or continental breakfasts are served here until early afternoon. The bar's kid-friendly omelets, burgers, fries, and salads accompany soft and alcoholic drinks until late. Entertainment-wise, think pool table fun, and quiz and karaoke nights, but noise from the latter travels to some rooms. Reception arranges laundry and car rentals (at a fee), and stores luggage after check-out for free. On-site parking is free and plentiful, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
