Scene

Pleasant, comfortable spaces with a generic feel offer a laid-back stay in a great location

The 1967-built Best Western Plaza is an older hotel that has made regular updates to stay current, but still has areas that need attention. Everything is clean and well-kept, but dated carpeting in hallways and meeting spaces need a refresh. Some areas, like the lobby and rooms, have a modest, pleasant design that's more contemporary. The lobby is small and generic, with soft neutral colors like ivory and gray, but there’s little color or design features to add interest. A few sculptures and paintings remind guests of the Greek setting, and there’s a decorative mosaic and pretty crystal drop chandelier to embellish the reception area. The outdoor pool is deck is an attractive perk, and offers a peaceful atmosphere. Couples are attracted to comfortable rooms and the convenient location, and some families come as well.

Location

A convenient spot within a 10-minute walk of good restaurants, the beach, and sites

The Best Western Plaza Hotel is in the center of Rhodes Town, the bustling capital city on the northern tip of the Greek island of Rhodes. There’s a mini-mart across the street, and many restaurants and shops within a five-minute walk of the hotel. It is a five-minute walk to a popular, public beach on the tip of the island and a free public parking lot. A seven-minute walk will bring guests to an entrance into the walled, medieval section of the city, a walkable area home to art galleries, museums, castle ruins, and old churches. It is a seven-minute walk to a main bus station.

The Acropolis of Rhodes offers a close look at ancient ruins, plus a gorgeous view of the ocean; it is a nine-minute drive from the hotel. Kallithea Springs -- a natural spring with reportedly therapeutic waters -- is a 16-minute drive from the hotel. It’s a 22-minute drive to a fun water park. The port is an eight-minute drive from the hotel, and Rhodes International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.

Rooms

Generic rooms with a few extras like minibars and balconies

Standard rooms are simply outfitted with neutral tones and light-wood furniture that give them a generic feel. Some rooms have dated carpet, while others have been upgraded to hardwood floors for a nicer look. Rooms lack embellishment, aside from a painting or two, but they are clean and comfortable, and some are quite spacious. Furnished balconies come standard, and some have distant sea views. Suites have a double bed in the living area, plus a separate room with another double. All rooms have a small flat-screen TV, minibar, iron, and a free safe. Kettles are available on request. Bathrooms are bland with shower/tub combos, though a shower stall and separate tub in some are surprising additions. A hairdryer is provided and free toiletries include soap, lotion, shower gel, and shampoo.

Features

A restaurant, a pool with a whirlpool, a bar, and free Wi-Fi

Basic on-site amenities are available, including a good restaurant and nice pool. The restaurant serves three meals daily -- a free breakfast, plus lunch and dinner. Full- and half-board options are available. Breakfast is a continental buffet that guests find plentiful and of good quality. Lunch and dinner offer a choice of buffet or a la carte options, both Greek and international cuisine.

The pool is a good size for the hotel and includes a whirlpool to one side. The terrace is packed with free sunbeds and a few umbrellas. City buildings are on all sides, but palm trees, greenery, and flowers beautify the area. The pool bar offers snacks and drinks, plus some shaded seating next to the pool. There’s also a sauna, for a fee. Massages can be arranged, but there’s no on-site spa or fitness room. Meeting rooms are available, though the design is generic and looks old. Wi-Fi is free throughout the building.
