Situated on a main highway into downtown Newport and near government buildings, the Howard Johnson Middletown Newport Area is an ideal location for business and government travelers, especially with its spacious conference room. Scene

Simple chain hotel, ideal for business and government travelers

From the outside, the Howard Johnson in Middletown is a long, ranch-style building extending down the side street. The lobby is the apex of the design, situated on the corner of West Main Street and High Street. Rooms are all located along the side street, away from the main highway and the main hub of the hotel -- the lobby and indoor pool. The design of the hotel is ideal for travelers looking for a quiet place to rest their heads after work or exploring Newport. While the clientele at the hotel tends towards business and naval travel -- due to nearby government buildings -- there are also a fair amount of families as the hotel offers value compared to downtown Newport choices (especially during high season). The contemporary lobby is a particularly nice place to relax and socialize. Flavored water is set out all day, freshly baked cookies are provided in the afternoon, and there's a lovely stone fireplace. The indoor pool has a tendency to be a bit busy with kids playing, especially during inclement weather or low season. Travelers looking to be on the outskirts of Newport might consider Homewood Suites in Middletown. It has many of the same amenities, and a few nice additions like a modern backyard patio and grilling area, 24-hour convenience store, and a nicer fitness center. Those looking to splurge might consider Hotel Viking, located in the Historic District of Newport, it has all the bells and whistles of a spa, room service, and more in-room amenities.
