Bottom Line

The Hotel Laxnes is a budget hotel
in the coastal town of Mosfellsbaer, on the outskirts of Reykjavik. The public areas of the hotel are a bit
dated, but the 26 simply decorated guest rooms are clean, comfortable, and well maintained,
with modern bathrooms. Some of the guest rooms are equipped with kitchenettes,
and a balcony is a must-have for a chance to catch the Northern Lights during
the winter months. This hotel offers good value for money and reviews from past
guests are enthusiastic. Notable features include a free buffet breakfast, an

comparable hotel inside Reykjavik could consider 22 Hill Hotel instead.

Scene

Simple, motel-style property popular with couples, families, and groups

Hotel Laxnes occupies a
long, gray, two-story building with sloped roofs, resembling a motel. Located on
a quiet street with minimal traffic, it’s surrounded by other businesses and
restaurants. The spacious parking lot houses several vintage cars belonging to the owner’s personal collection. The reception area is cluttered
with sofas, chairs, glass showcases, tourist leaflets, and picture frames on
the walls. Though the decor is dated and doesn’t have a particular or
consistent style, everything appears neat, clean, and tidy. This hotel caters to
leisure travelers exploring Iceland, and it's a good base for hikers. It’s
especially popular with couples, but also attracts many families and groups. The bar is a good place to mingle with other guests and locals, who are regulars here.

Location

In the coastal town of Mosfellsbaer, outside Reykjavik

The Hotel Laxnes is located on
the outskirts of Reykjavik -- a 10-minute drive away -- in the coastal town of
Mosfellsbaer, overlooking Esja Mountain, just off Iceland’s scenic Ring Road. Across
the street from the hotel there are shops, a supermarket, a gas station, a
large sports bar, and several fast-food restaurants. The bus to Reykjavik can
be caught at the bus stop just outside the hotel; the number 15 bus is the
fastest and takes 20 minutes to reach the city. The hotel is in an ideal
location for guests who love hiking: A river runs through the town and there
are waterfalls, and a lake to explore nearby, and views of the sea, mountains
and -- in the winter months -- the Northern Lights. The popular Alafoss Wool Store
is a five-minute drive away, and the Laxnes Horse Farm, which offers horseback riding, is a nine-minute drive away. The local golf club,
Golfklubburinn Kjolur, is a five-minute drive from the hotel. Keflavik
International Airport is a 45-minute drive away.

Rooms

Clean and well-maintained guest rooms and suites

The spacious guest rooms at
Hotel Laxnes are clean and well maintained, but decorated in an unremarkable style of simple wood furnishings, white walls, and small bentwood chairs. The modern bathrooms are reasonably spacious and equipped
with shower/tub combos. There are seven Studio Rooms which include kitchenettes, plus two Family Rooms and three big Suites with red curtains and bedspreads, oriental rugs, and rustic furniture. Two of the Suites have large, north-facing balconies -- ideal for watching the Northern Lights. All units have tube TVs and electric kettles.

Features

Free breakfast, on-site bar, games room, free Wi-Fi

Despite its size and budget status, Hotel Laxnes offers several crowd-pleasing features. A free continental-style
buffet breakfast is served in the bar area on the ground floor. The bar is
popular with locals and has a large sports screen and games room with a pool
table, a dartboard, and board games. From the outdoor hot tub guests can enjoy
the views of Esja Mountain. Hotel staff are on hand to arrange car rentals,
airport transfers, tours, and activities such as horseback riding, fishing, and
kayaking. On-site parking is free, and the free Wi-Fi connection is accessible
throughout the hotel.
