in central Reykjavik -- it’s a great location for exploring the city, as attractions like the Hallgrimskirkja Church and the
Harpa Concert Hall are within a 10-minute walk. At first glance, rooms are fairly plain, but walls are hung with the hotel’s famous art
collection -- the largest private holding in Iceland. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and a good
breakfast is included in the room rate. Many guests take advantage of the
hotel’s fantastic restaurant, and there’s a cozy bar with happy hours as well. The property is ideal
for art lovers who want a simple room in central Reykjavik.
Scene
Well-known hotel in the capital, famous for its extensive art collection
Built in the 1960s as one of Reykjavik's first hotels, the building has
a great deal of history, and is considered an institution with locals. As well as the striking '60s architecture, what
makes it stand out is the incredible art collection that the owners have built
up over the years. In fact, the hotel houses the largest private art collection in Iceland,
making it a haven for art lovers. Over 400 pieces of original Icelandic paintings,
drawings, and sculptures are on display throughout the hotel, in both public
areas and the guest rooms. Art aside, interiors are definitely classic, and possibly a bit dated, with pink quartz floors, wood paneling, and antique furniture. The Gallery Restaurant draws guests from across the city and from the hotel -- it's a popular local choice that has traditional design elements and -- surprise! -- plenty of Icelandic art hanging on the walls. The hotel mainly attracts couples and a slightly
older crowd, though some business guests stay here as well.
Location
Centrally located in Iceland’s capital -- walk to most sights
Hotel Holt is set on a quiet residential street in the Reykjavik 101
district of Iceland’s coastal capital, a one-minute walk from the U.S., German,
and U.K. embassies. The city center is pretty compact and this property is a
good base to explore the sights on foot. It’s a five-minute walk to Hallgrimskirkja
Church and less than 10 minutes on foot to the Harpa
Concert Hall and Conference Centre. Those wanting to see more Icelandic artwork
during their trip can walk to the Asgrimur Jonsson Collection in 10 minutes,
and one of the oldest shopping streets in the city, Laugavegur, is a 10-minute
walk from the hotel as well. The National Museum of Iceland is also 10 minutes away on foot, while the scenic harbor is a 15-minute walk. Reykjavik Airport is only a five-minute
drive away.
Rooms
Traditional, art-filled rooms, some with great views of Reykjavik
Decor is classic and traditional across all room categories, and despite the hotel's stunning art collection -- which is used to brighten up the rooms -- some guests may find the design a little bland (though the hotel is in the process of renovating its rooms as of January 2017). Several rooms offer lovely city views, while taupe carpeting and dark wood veneer furniture create a cozy ambience punctuated by colorful textiles that are used sparingly. Rooms are available in Single, Double/Twin, Superior, and Suite categories. All rooms include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs ranging from 26 to 37 inches, work desks, electric kettles for coffee or tea, and minibars. White tile bathrooms have a shower and wall-mounted sinks with limited counter space. Rooms with a bath can be requested, and toiletries, bathrobes, and a hairdryer are provided. The hotel's four Suites are large and have a separate living area with a sofa bed. Superior rooms and suites also grant guests free access to a nearby fitness center and swimming pool during their stay.
