The upper-middle-range Browns Boutique Hotel is a charming property located a three-minute walk from the center of Queenstown. With only 10 rooms, it feels more like a bed-and-breakfast than a hotel, particularly thanks to a great breakfast spread of hot and cold items served for free every morning. Rooms are elegant but simple, and all have Juliet balconies -- many with lake or hill views. Amenities, however, are sparse, as there are no wellness facilities or restaurant service for lunch and dinner. Travelers looking for something with more amenities and hotel-like vibe may want to consider the Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa, although note that it is a bit removed from the center of town.
Scene
Small, Italian-style property with lovely courtyard and mountain views
Browns Boutique Hotel is an Italian-style villa property with a lovely soft-yellow facade. Inside, the look and feel is homey, with a small lower-level reception area featuring a couple of chairs alongside a table with brochures, plus a living room with a computer and some bookshelves. Breakfast is served in an adjacent section with a couple of long tables, so expect to sit with other guests during the morning meal, bed-and-breakfast style. There's also a large patio with a fireplace, a few tables, and pretty mountain views in the distance. Most guests are vacationing couples and solo travelers looking for a small property that's within easy access of town.
Location
Quiet location within a close walk of Queenstown
Browns Boutique Hotel is situated on a quiet residential street on a hilltop, surrounded by older houses on the edge of the beautiful Ben Lomond Scenic Reserve. The area is quiet but still close to the center of Queenstown: It's a three-minute walk from the shops, art galleries, and restaurants in the center of town thanks to a shortcut pathway from the hotel. Queenstown Gardens are a 10-minute walk from the hotel, while Jack's Point Golf Course and Clubhouse is a 25-minute drive away. Queenstown Airport takes just under 20 minutes to reach by car.
Rooms
Simple but elegantly furnished rooms with Juliet balconies and scenic views
Browns Boutique Hotel features 10 rooms, all with either one king-size bed or two twins. All are identically furnished in soft, neutral tones, oak furniture, and white embroidered quilts topped with floral throw pillows. French doors open to Juliet balconies, most with views of the surrounding hills and/or out onto the lake. Standard amenities include 32-inch, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with DVD players, mini-fridges stocked with free juice and milk, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and bathrobes. Decent-sized bathrooms have cream-colored tiling and either shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, as well as toiletries and hairdryers. Note that while rooms are generally pleasant, there have been a few complaints of noise and tired fixtures.
Features
Limited amenities include free Wi-Fi and free made-to-order breakfast
Amenities are limited at the hotel, as there are no gym or spa facilities, pool, or full restaurant. The hotel, however, serves a free cooked-to-order breakfast of items like pancakes or fried eggs. Note that the dining room has two dining tables, so guests eat family-style. Outside, there is a lovely courtyard with a wood-burning fireplace and giant chessboard, while inside, a computer for guest use is available, as is a library of DVDs and books for guests to borrow. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there's plenty of free on-site parking.
