The three-and-a-half-pearl Paradise Links Resort is a self-catering hotel on the outskirts of Port Douglas, a 10-minute walk from Four Mile Beach. The resort’s 68 attractive, contemporary units range from standard hotel rooms to sprawling four-bedroom villas. It’s worth noting that while most have fully equipped kitchens, living rooms, and dining tables, the Links Hotel Rooms don't have cooking facilities. Although there are no dining options on-site, many are within a 10-minute drive. The resort does have two attractive, shady pools set in the grounds, with adjacent barbecue grills for guest use, as well as a tennis court. The resort is a bus ride away from Port Douglas proper, so travelers looking to stay closer to the center of town may want to try the Peppers Beach Club Port Douglas.
Scene
Sprawling, verdant grounds with buildings and villas dotted about
Paradise Links Resort Port Douglas is less a hotel than a jumble of buildings and villas, each the size of a large, detached house, in sprawling and verdant grounds with mature palms. There isn’t much communal space here, but there are two pools shaded by fabric draped from high pergolas. The smaller of the two pools is modern and freeform, while the other is a more naturalistic affair -- it is surrounded by tall ferns and has a water feature and rocky accents. The hotel tends to attract parents with young children looking for a family-friendly vacation.
Location
10-minute drive to Port Douglas proper, but only 10-minute walk to Four Mile Beach
The resort is located in a Port Douglas suburb a 10-minute drive away from the center of town. While the resort offers a minibus there and back, it costs to ride it. There are a number of shops, bars, and restaurants in town, but there’s very little in the immediate surrounds. However, Four Mile Beach, a golden stretch of sand, is only a 10-minute walk away, or four minutes by car. Two minutes’ walk in the other direction is the Palmer Sea Reef golf course, which the resort backs up to. It’s an hour drive south to Cairns, and just slightly less than that to Cairns Airport.
Rooms
Smartly decorated rooms, apartments, and stand-alone villas
The hotel's units range between standard hotel rooms, apartments, and stand-alone villas. Regardless of how they are configured, all are spacious and well-decorated with contemporary decor, neutral tones, and windows that let in lots of natural light. The Links Hotel Rooms are the smallest of the bunch, offering tea- and coffee-making facilities, AC, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs, ironing facilities, balconies, and desks. Given that there are no dining options on-site, the lack of cooking amenities can be inconvenient. Apartments and villas, meanwhile, have fully equipped kitchens that include ovens and dishwashers. Living and dining areas are also found here. Apartments have up to two bedrooms, while villas can have four. Bathrooms have either walk-in shower cubicles with rainfall showerheads or large corner tubs with massage jets and showerheads. Villas also have a utility room with washer/dryers, and garages.
Features
Two pools and a tennis court, but no restaurant
Deep in its verdant and sprawling grounds, the hotel has two swimming pools. The smaller of the two is a modern pool, secluded and shaded by a vast canopy of black gauze hanging from a pergola. The larger one is busier, and has a dramatic waterfall feature, as well as a small, shallow pool for kids. Both of these pools have adjacent barbecue grills for guests to use. A tennis court is in the grounds, but there's no gym. The hotel runs a shuttle bus to Port Douglas, but the resort charges guests to take a ride on it -- a journey that may be necessary pretty often given that there isn’t a restaurant or shop on-site, and there’s very little in the surrounding area. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, and parking on-site is free.
