Bottom Line

The Moorings on Cavill Avenue offers mid-range apartments overlooking the Nerang River, three blocks from Surfers Paradise's main drag. The property maintains clean, somewhat outdated and mismatched rooms that vary in decor from one unit to the next, but it's a particularly good deal for families in the low season. Rooms are generally bright and are cleaned once a week. All have washers and dryers along with full kitchens. On-site amenities include an outdoor saltwater pool with a barbecue area, a hot tub, and a kids' pool. The more upscale apartments at Q1 Resort and Spa sometimes aren't too much pricier and are also worth considering.

Scene

Apartment-hotel popular with large families traveling together and repeat guests

This medium-rise white stucco building has a plain tiled lobby with a wooden reception desk and a couple of couches. A casual family vibe pervades the property, which features gently worn but pleasant, well-manicured grounds with trimmed lawns and some vegetation surrounding cement pathways. There's also a small outdoor seating area near the barbecue area.

Location

Overlooking the river, a short walk from the main drag of Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets

The hotel overlooks the Nerang River, adjacent to riverside docks and three blocks from the popular Esplanade on the opposite shore. It's within a five-minute walk of the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets, restaurants, and a Woolworths. The 705 bus for Sea World stops a three-minute walk from the hotel and takes 15 minutes to reach the theme park. The TX2 bus goes to the Wet’n’Wild water park and takes about half an hour. The airport takes about an hour to reach by tram.

Rooms

Large and plain -- but bright -- apartments with mismatched furniture, kitchens, and washer/dryers

Rooms vary widely in terms of decor -- some are outfitted with tile floors while others feature engineered wood. Bedspreads are modest patterned affairs that can be slightly dated, and the occasional piece of mass-reproduced art hangs on white walls. Some apartments have been refurbished, and have glass tables, brushed-chrome barstools, and wraparound leather couches, though these are in the minority. All units have washers and dryers, sitting areas with dining tables, flat-screen TVs, and balconies with patio furniture. Note that some of the bedrooms lack air-conditioning units and keeping doors open may be necessary for air circulation.Minimally furnished bathrooms have walk-in showers and some also have separate tubs. Kitchens have -- at a minimum -- stoves, fridges, kettles, microwaves, and dishwashers. Weekly housekeeping is included in room rates.

Features

Saltwater pool with hot tub and kids' pool, barbecues, and Wi-Fi for a fee

The Moorings features a saltwater pool with an adjacent kids' pool and a hot tub, all nestled amongst palms and other beachfront vegetation behind the hotel and overlooking the Nerang River. There's also a barbecue area with two grills for guest use. Wi-Fi is available throghout the hotel, for a fee.
