Bottom Line

The family-run Auberge du Littoral is a 54-room, three-pearl hotel located in a quiet residential area about a 10-minute drive from Old Quebec. The property is split between a charming old house and a newer addition. Renovated guest rooms feature modern decor, cork floors, and stylish bathrooms, but non-renovated rooms (about a quarter of them) are dated. All units have amenities like mini-fridges, microwaves, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel offers coffee and breakfast all day, though it has no full-service restaurant and breakfast costs extra. There's also a spa with a small sauna and private rooms for massages and beauty treatments. Wi-Fi throughout and parking are free. Guests looking for more amenities might consider the the Hotel Ambassadeur Quebec, which has an indoor pool, fitness center, and full-service restaurant.

Scene

Charming old home paired with updated section for leisure travelers

Set on a wide boulevard in a residential area of Quebec City, Auberge du Littoral occupies two buildings: a beige-brick house with a charming forest green turret and homey wraparound porch, and a more modern but blander, boxier building that houses the property's newer facilities. Reception, situated in the house, has a cozy, bed-and-breakfast vibe, with original and updated elements like wood wainscoting, a chandelier, and stained glass windows. The reception area extends directly into the attractive, wood-floored breakfast room and coffee lounge, with a brick fireplace and a bay window. As evidenced by the hotel's two different buildings, this property offers an amalgam of new and old elements, which range from more modern spots that can lack character to charming areas that can verge on outdated. Couples and families from afar and Quebec City locals alike are drawn to the hotel's quiet, laid-back atmosphere outside the city center.

Location

Outside city center, right off Highway 440, near some sights farther afield

The hotel is situated in a quiet, residential area off Highway 440, a main route for accessing Quebec City from the east. The riverfront is mostly lined with hotels, and although there are a few restaurants and strip malls within walking distance, a car is recommended for getting around. It's conveniently equidistant from the city center and some popular regional attractions. Montmorency Falls, Orléans Island, and Old Quebec are a 10-minute drive or less. Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport is about a 25-minute drive.

Rooms

Mostly modern renovated rooms, but some dated leftovers

The Auberge's guest rooms come in two styles. About two-thirds have been renovated and are modern, if somewhat generic, with cork floors and a dark-brown-and-white color scheme. Accents like striped bed runners brighten them up, and the furniture is functional. Bathrooms are chic, featuring shiny, black sink tops and spacious walk-in showers. The un-renovated rooms have unabashed motel-style decor, with dull gray wall-to-wall carpeting and floral or quilted bedspreads. However, they're still tidy and well-maintained, and feature bathrooms with combination showers and tubs. All units have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, mini-fridges, microwaves, hairdryers, and free Wi-Fi. According to the category of the room, other extras are offered, like i-Pod docking stations. The Presidential Suite has two Queen-size beds, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, a living room with a fireplace, and a private balcony.

Features

All-day breakfast and on-site spa, but few other features, and breakfast costs extra

This mid-range hotel has a few notable features. The hotel's 24H Cafe is a classic, bed-and-breakfast-style room situated near reception, which serves breakfast and coffee all day. Breakfast costs extra, and there is no full-service restaurant or bar. The on-site spa is modern with a small sauna, manicure and pedicure areas, and treatment rooms (including a couple's room) for massages beauty treatments. Other features include a roomy outdoor terrace with minimal seating, an outdoor fountain "splash pad" for kids (seasonal), and a laundry room with a washer and dryer. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and on-site parking is free.
