Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora

The Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora is a classy, upscale option just next to peaceful Villa Borghese on Via Veneto. The 155 rooms are handsome, with amenities including queen or king beds, high thread-count linens, bathrobes and slippers, and pillow menus -- but you'll need to join the chain's free loyalty program for free Wi-Fi. The wraparound rooftop terrace with spectacular views and a fantastic free breakfast buffet are guest favorites, while an informal bar and restaurant, separate Mediterranean gourmet restaurant, and fitness center round out leisure facilities. Business facilities include 10 meeting rooms and a business center,  although internet access isn’t free. Though service is generally lauded by guests, Marriott Rewards members tend to feel less pampered. For a modern business hotel with Wi-Fi included, try UNA Hotel Roma instead.

The Westin Excelsior, Rome

This Beaux Arts property has occupied prime space on the celebrated Via Veneto since 1906, and was made famous by Federico Fellini’s 1960 movie “La Dolce Vita.” The elegant hotel, rebranded by Westin several years ago, has hosted celebrities and statesmen, and also has the distinction of having the largest suite in Europe, the nearly 12,000-square-foot Villa La Cupola. Some guests say the property is beginning to show its age, but that it offers good value for a five-pearl hotel. Rooms are nicer than at the nearby (and often similarly priced) Rome Marriott Grand Flora, though those looking for a more boutique experience may want to consider The First Luxury Art Hotel.

Sina Bernini Bristol

Sina Bernini Bristol is an elegant, upscale hotel on Piazza Barberini, just a 10-minute walk from Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. The hotel has a pretty restaurant with panoramic views and a large terrace, as well as a small spa and a fitness center. Breakfast comes with some room rates, but earns mixed reviews. The 127 guest rooms are spacious and range from contemporary to classically decorated, and have thoughtful touches like generous amenity kits, bathrobes, and turndown service. They're not quite up to advertised five-star standards, however. Wi-Fi is free, but it can be spotty. Guests should compare rates with the more luxurious Boscolo Exedra, which is located on Piazza della Repubblica and offers a seasonal infinity pool.

Hotel Stendhal

The Stendhal is a small upscale hotel located a short walk from the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. Most of its 35 rooms have classic Italian decor in pastel-blue hues, and amenities such as flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. A few Luxury Suites are located in an annex building and have more stylish, contemporary decor as well as perks such as coffeemakers and robes. There is an intimate bar serving drinks until late at night, and rates include Wi-Fi and continental breakfast with eggs. The hotel is a decent value for this category; the nearby Barocco Hotel also lacks a fitness center and full restaurant, but tends to be pricier.

Grand Hotel Via Veneto

This 116-room Art Deco inspired property opened in 2009 at the top of Via Veneto, one of Rome’s most exclusive streets. The modern but understated luxury hotel has excellent features, including a large luxury spa (access to facilities incurs a fee), a Michelin-starred restaurant, and an impressive art collection on display. The hotel is a 15-minute walk to the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, and a two-minute walk to the Villa Borghese gardens. Rooms are spacious, though lower categories have internal views, and the marble bathrooms -- though lovely and featuring Bulgari toiletries -- have shower/tub combos with partial glass partitions that some may find inconvenient. The hotel is a bit smaller and more intimate than the similarly priced and maze-like Westin Excelsior nearby. Guests looking for a more boutique experience may want to consider The First Luxury Art Hotel or The Inn at the Spanish Steps

Luxe Rose Garden Hotel Roma

The 65-room Rose Palace Hotel is on one of only a few quiet streets in Rome -- where Via Boncompagni branches off Via Veneto at the corner of the American Embassy. The upscale boutique property is within walking distance of some of Rome's best shopping and dining, as well as the Spanish Steps and Borghese Gallery. There's no extra fee for pets and the soundproofed rooms are elegant and spacious. Business travelers can take advantage of a wide array of high-tech conference rooms ranging in size from small to very large; everyone can take advantage of the spacious spa with a small indoor pool, a rare feature for a Rome hotel.

Ambasciatori Palace Hotel

Elegant Ambasciatori Palace Hotel is an upper-middle-range option with classic charm that caters to leisure guests, along with those visiting on government-related business. Its central location on prestigious Via Veneto is convenient, and the 151 spacious rooms have a classic feel, with amenities including king beds and well-stocked minibars. The restaurant looks dated, but serves a free breakfast buffet that includes homemade cakes and hot options, as well as international cuisine for lunch and dinner. Food is also available at the stately lobby bar, but beware the quality. Nine meeting rooms and a business center are available, and a 24-hour gym, free Wi-Fi, and private parking round out the facilities. For a more modern upscale option, try the Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora instead, though rates are often higher.

La Piccola Maison

The five-room La Piccola Maison is a small, modern hotel located in an historic building on the iconic, ritzy Via Veneto, in the heart of Rome. The clean-lined, modern rooms have original details such as exposed brick and wooden beams in addition to contemporary decor, mini-fridges with free bottled water, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. There's an elegant pied-à-terre with a small kitchen and open-plan living space. The two-and-a-half pearl hotel has limited facilities -- there's free Wi-Fi, but no parking, bar, or included breakfast. The nearby Hotel Oceania has similar rooms and a free breakfast for about the same price as La Piccola Maison.

Stylish Room

This nine-room boutique is awkwardly located on the second floor of a historic building. But once you get past having to climb the stairs to the front desk, the hotel offers great value: Rooms are large with up-to-date bathrooms and free Wi-Fi, there is free breakfast, and even pets stay for no extra fee. The room decor is contemporary, with wood floors, colorful artwork, bright accent walls, and bedding in shades of white, brown, and gray. Plus, the location is great for sightseeing; the Villa Borghese, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish steps are all within walking distance. If you're looking for lots of amenities, however, you may want to consider staying elsewhere (the hotel has no fitness center and no full restaurant -- just a breakfast room).

Hotel Romanico Palace

The four-pearl, 19th-century Hotel Romanico Palace is lavishly designed in imperial Roman style, with frescoes and city views from the seventh-floor dining room. The 120 rooms feature Italian Baroque interiors, and suites have balconies or terraces (some also have outdoor mini pools). Roman style also adorns the small, dimly lit spa -- its Turkish bath and sauna require a fee, and the gym is modern but cramped. An American-style bar is in the extravagantly decorated lobby, but some guests find the heavily gilded decor verging on tacky. Near the Piazza Barberini, the hotel makes a good base for visiting many of Rome's major sights. Travelers might want to also consider the Hotel Bernini Bristol, whose spa doesn't require a fee.
