Hotel Le Nouveau Monde
64, Chaussee du Sillon

The nautically themed Hotel Le Nouveau Monde, an upscale property built in 2012, faces the sea in Saint-Malo, France. Its location is about a 15-minute walk to the maze of narrow streets in the city's historic, walled center. This beige, masonry hotel riffs on the themes of French explorers, with wall-spanning maps and floor-to-ceiling leather bound books. Most of the lovely 83 rooms face the waterfront, as does the gourmet restaurant and bar; breakfast costs extra. An indoor pool, on the top floor of the hotel, has lap lanes and water jets and the spa includes a hammam-style sauna. If Le Nouveau Monde is booked, travelers can try a similar property, Residence Reine Marine.

Kyriad Saint Malo Centre - Plage
49 Chaussee du Sillon

The 56-room, three-pearl Kyriad Saint Mal Centre - Plage is directly opposite Le Sillon, Saint-Malo's main beach. Rooms are simple and pristine, with an overall nautical aesthetic and wooden floorboards throughout -- many have unobstructed sea views. Bathrooms feature stand-up showers and ample vanity space, though some rooms have high-tech showers and jetted tubs. Free Wi-Fi, a sauna, fitness room, and business facilities are available on-site. The hotel's breakfast room features ocean views and serves a continental breakfast for a fee. For slightly more chic rooms, the Hotel Ambassadeurs is a solid option, though it lacks a sauna or fitness center and rooms can be small.

Hotel La Villefromoy
7 boulevard Hebert, Plage de Rochebonne

La Villefromoy is an upscale hotel housed in a historic Malouine mansion. It's a three-minute walk from Saint-Malo's main beach, but far from the old town. Guests can choose between sea or garden view rooms, all finished to a high standard, with dark varnished wooden furniture and ample storage for guest luggage. Bathrooms are clean and spacious, with free-standing showers or shower/tub combos. A continental or English breakfast made with local ingredients is available daily for a fee. There is free Wi-Fi and limited free parking is available on site. There's also a lounge, bar, garden, and outdoor terrace with sea views.

Ambassadeurs Hotel
11 chaussee du Sillon

The three-pearl Hotel Ambassadeurs is located on Saint-Malo's largest beach, with a view of Brittany's North Atlantic coast from many rooms. The 20 rooms are decorated in dark, handsome tones, with some rooms sporting private balconies and unobstructed ocean views. Bathrooms are neutral and contemporary, with floor-to-ceiling metro tiling and quality chrome fixtures, but they are small and reaching the old town requires a 15-minute walk. The hotel features a large roof terrace with panoramic views of Saint-Malo, free Wi-Fi, and free on-site guest parking. Breakfast comes recommended and is available for a fee in the hotel's Creperie Restaurant.

Le Grand Hotel des Thermes
100 boulevard Hebert, Grande Plage du Sillon

Housed in a beautiful Belle Epoque building on the beach in a quiet area of Saint-Malo, this 178-room four-pearl property has a popular restaurant and spa. Rooms vary drastically, from compact and dated Standard Rooms to more modern Suites with fantastic sea views. Although the building and location are lovely, the hotel is not within easy walking distance to the center of Saint-Malo. But there's no question that the Grand Hotel has character and the distinctiveness of another era, not to mention its own brand of cosmetics and two renowned chefs. Still, travelers might want to consider the slightly less-expensive Hotel Antinea down the beach.

Hotel Oceania Saint Malo
Chaussee du Sillon 2 rue Joseph Loth, Chaussee du Sillon

The minimalistically modern Hotel Oceania Saint Malo is an upper-middle-range property along the beach and promenade in Saint Malo, a five-minute walk from the historic walled city center. The hotel has 78 clean, contemporary rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs, and sea-facing rooms have balconies with exceptional views of the water and Fort National. A lobby bar serves up light snacks and drinks and a breakfast buffet is available daily, for a fee. The hotel has an outdoor hot tub and small fitness center, but no on-site restaurant or pool. Travelers may also want to consider the Hotel Le Nouveau Monde which has more style plus a spa, sauna, and indoor pool, but is a bit farther from the historic city center and is more expensive.
