XV Beacon

A 63-room upscale hotel with exquisite service and sleek decor in the residential Beacon Hill, Fifteen Beacon (or XV Beacon) offers a luxury boutique experience. The building, built in 1903, blends historic New England elegance with modern, minimalist design and high-tech amenities. Rooms are spacious, with stylishly masculine decor, and include gas fireplaces. Expert concierges, free chauffeur services in a Lexus, and the location at the top of Boston Common make this hotel a great fit for discerning business or leisure travelers.

The Boxer Boston

The 80-room Boxer Boston is a hip, upper-middle-range hotel in the city's Flatiron building, a five-minute walk from the TD Garden. Posh, industrial rooms are on the small side but well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and K-cup coffeemakers plus contemporary, sleek bathrooms. The ground floor is home to a stylish restaurant and bar that serves a breakfast buffet (for a fee), light dinner fare, and drinks. There are also many other dining options nearby, including in Faneuil Hall, a 10-minute stroll away. There’s a small fitness center on-site, but no pool. Guests looking for more on-site amenities should compare rates with Revere Hotel Boston Common, which has a rooftop bar and an indoor pool.

Kimpton Onyx Hotel

A three-minute walk from TD Garden, the upper-middle-range Kimpton Onyx Hotel is a contemporary property with a great location for all types of travelers. Its 112 rooms can be a bit small, but they have bright pops of red, flat-screen TVs, iHome docking stations, and well-stocked minibars. Nightly free wine hours and a pet-friendly policy create a pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately, a daily amenity fee is charged to cover things such as Wi-Fi and access to a small fitness room, which are typically free at comparable hotels. Other key features include a lounge-like eatery off the lobby and a basement meeting room. If being close to TD Garden is a primary concern, it's worth comparing rates with the nearby Boxer. Kimpton devotees preferring to be near Boston Common can upgrade to the romantic Nine Zero, though it's pricier.

Battery Wharf Hotel, Boston Waterfront

Opened in 2008, the 150-room Fairmont Battery Wharf has great harborside views, attentive service, spacious standard rooms, a celebrated restaurant, and a location on the site of one of Boston's most historic wharves. Overall, it's a great harborfront pick.

Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill

THE HOTEL HAS RENOVATED SINCE OUR VISIT. WE WILL UPDATE OUR REVIEW AND PHOTOS AS SOON AS WE CAN. A clean 303-room business hotel across from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Beacon Hill. The outdoor pool, comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi are highlights, but the small bathrooms, tube TVs (in standard rooms), and outdated furniture make it worth comparing rates elsewhere.

Beacon Hill Hotel and Bistro

Originally built in the mid 1800s, the three-pearl Beacon Hill Hotel and Bistro scores high marks for its heritage character and coveted central location. With only 12 small rooms and one suite, the boutique property is more charming and intimate than the Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill, a larger mid-range alternative in the area; however, it has far fewer amenities. Seamlessly blending old and new, the inviting guest rooms have a soothing vibe, although street noise may disrupt the apparent calm. A fortifying free breakfast is served each morning in the on-site bistro, which also serves other meals and room service. A cozy bar is also on-site.

The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Boston

Occupying a former jail, the 298-room Liberty Hotel is a unique luxury property with a hip atmosphere and a playful design that honors the building’s rich history. Rooms are stylish and elegant, with tons of interesting decorative elements that incorporate the incarceration theme, and upscale bathrooms with separate rain showers and soaking tubs. The stunning lobby is a popular hangout spot for afterwork drinks, and Scampo is known for its wonderful Italian cuisine and chic interiors. The Liberty is popular with couples, and also draws many business travelers with over 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, 24-hour business and fitness centers, and lots of wonderful dining and drinking options on-site. The location in Beacon Hill is convenient for shopping, dining, and hospitals, but most major tourist attractions are at least a 15-minute T ride away. Families may want to compare rates at Hotel Marlowe.
