The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe
13031 Ritz-Carlton Highlands Court

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe is a five-pearl full-service resort in the mountains above Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort. Along with luxe rooms, a huge spa, and fine dining, the Ritz-Carlton offers ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes and many other recreational activities -- including multiple outdoor pools and Jacuzzis that are open year-round. Fees abound, however, unlike at the Resort at Squaw Creek, which offers lovely rooms with no fees at a lower price point.

Northstar Lodge by Welk Resorts
970 Northstar Dr

The Northstar Lodge, Hyatt Residence Club is a 15-minute drive from Lake Tahoe, and located within walking distance of North Village gondola. The hotel is an excellent alternative to area properties because of its large and tricked out apartment-style guest rooms, and its close proximity to local attractions. The hotel is a timeshare property that's open to guests so villas are equipped with amenities suitable for longer visits, including washer and dryers and an extensive array of food preparation implements, though these may vary slightly from room to room. Outdoor fireplaces are great features. The clean and elegant fitness building is next door to the hotel, and there is a pool with swimming lanes and adjacent whirlpool with gorgeous surrounding views. Note that there are no restaurants or bars on the property.

Best Western Plus Truckee-Tahoe Hotel
11331 Brockway Rd

The mid-range BEST WESTERN PLUS Truckee-Tahoe Hotel is close to Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort and many outdoor recreation attractions at Truckee. The rooms are updated (with the exception of a few relic tube-style TVs), and the feather-mattress beds are super comfortable. A heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, free hot breakfast, and popular on-site restaurant offer guests plenty to keep them happy during their stay. Guests who prefer to be lakefront, though, might consider the similarly priced (though not as modern) Franciscan Lakeside Lodge.

Iron Horse - Tahoe Mountain Lodging
4001 Northstar Dr

The four-pearl Tahoe Mountain Resorts Lodging offers direct access to Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort, with plenty of nearby upscale shopping and dining found via cobblestone streets. Housed in separate lodges in the quaint Village at Northstar, the spacious, luxe rooms include kitchens, surround-sound TV systems, and fireplaces. A heated pool, underground parking, and the beautiful mountain setting are added bonuses. However, it can be difficult to find a room here in winter, and rates may increase depending on availability.

Truckee Donner Lodge
10527 Cold Stream Rd

Truckee Donner Lodge is a mid-range, relatively small, motel-style property off I-80. It has a quiet atmosphere and overall cleanliness in its 64 rooms -- a good value for this price category. Because the hotel is popular, and tends to host groups and group events, service can be a bit slow at times. The property is situated a 20-minute drive from Lake Tahoe, in the midst of pine trees and at the base of a good local hiking trail. There is very little immediately surrounding the hotel, but it is close to some area attractions -- such as Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park, and various ski resorts off the highway. Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking keep costs low.
