Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou
No.389 Tianhe Road

Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou is a stylishly designed five-pearl skyscraper connected to designer shopping at TaiKoo Hui mall. The property offers a walkway to the Shipaiqiao Station and free shuttle service to the Guangzhou East Railway Station. There are a mixture of 263 elegantly decorated rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows and soaking bathtubs in many. But some guests take issue with the rooms' sound insulation. For guests in Oriental Club Lounge rooms there’s free breakfast and cocktail hour. The outdoor pool and massage pavilions provide luxurious relaxation with a nine-room spa and yoga in the modern gym. High-end designer touches create stylish settings in two restaurants and two bars. The Mandarin Oriental is an elegant choice, but luxury travelers that prefer a bolder, fashion-forward look may prefer the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich.

Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou
No.5 Zhujiang West Road, Pearl River New City, Tianhe District

Sleek, luxurious, and contemporary, the 344-room Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou towers 103 floors above Pearl River New City in Guangzhou's Tianhe business district. With a blend of bold and classic design elements, rooms and suites have panoramic views and stunning marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, plus large flat-screen TVs and Illy coffeemakers. Extras include a Couples Floor with romantic perks. Features range from an indoor pool with Guangzhou views to a luxury spa and a modern 24-hour gym with floor-to-ceiling windows and city views. There are four international dining options -- serving Japanese, Chinese, and Italian food -- and two bars. This is one of the best luxury choices in the area, but the Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou has rooms that are equally as luxurious.

Oakwood Premier Guangzhou
No.28 Tiyu East Road, Tianhe District

Oakwood Premier Guangzhou is a luxury high-rise hotel geared toward long-term stays with 225 studios and one- to four-bedroom apartments that include kitchens, laundry facilities, and steam showers in bathrooms. This 39-floor hotel overlooks the city and is in walking distance to the Grandview Mall and provides free shuttle service to the Canton Fair. For corporate guests there are four meeting rooms, Apple computers, and free Wi-Fi. The Oakroom restaurant and bar serves international cuisine and afternoon tea, or guests can order grocery store delivery service to cook in their apartments. There are also nice leisure amenities, including a 24-hour fitness center and outdoor pool -- kids have access to a colorfully decorated playroom. The swankier Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou offers a spa, but rooms are substantially more expensive.

Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe
No.215 Linhe Xiheng Road, Tianhe

The 498-room Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe is an upscale hotel near the Guangzhou East Railway Station. It has a bit more style than many Hilton properties -- common areas shimmer, and rooms have a handsome, contemporary finish with modern tech amenities. Four dining options serve everything from tapas to Italian and there are two bars. City views are available from the outdoor pool and the modern gym -- both of which are busy -- as well as the full-service spa. Free shuttles to Canton Fair are offered, but otherwise expect fees for things like in-room Wi-Fi (except for Hilton HHonors members). For lower rates and similar features, consider the China Hotel, though rooms are less sharp and it's not close to the train station.

Shangri-La Hotel Guangzhou
No.1 Huizhan East Road, Haizhu District

The 704-room Shangri-La Hotel Guangzhou is an enormous high-rise hotel on 12 acres of manicured grounds. The five-pearl hotel overlooks the Zhujiang River and is within walking distance to Canton Fair, but it’s far from the central business district. Classically designed rooms and suites feature marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, flat-screen TVs, and floor-to-ceiling windows with Pearl River views in some. There are multiple restaurants, two bars, and free breakfast for Horizon Club guests. A bar is by the outdoor pool and there are also an indoor pool, full-service spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and rooftop tennis courts. Tons of meeting space, including two ballrooms, and Internet corners appeal to business travelers. Families or long-stay guests may want to check out the Oakwood Premier Guangzhou, which has apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes.

The Mulian Urban Resort Hotels Huadu
Sky Villa, Northeast Shanqian Da Dao, Huadu District

The 98-room Sheraton Guangzhou Huadu Resort is a luxury oasis overlooking a reservoir outside of central Guangzhou. Spacious, contemporary rooms feature large windows with lake or garden views, and suites have hot tubs. Villas offer added luxury with private pools and extra privacy. Produce from the hotel’s farm is served in two elegant restaurants, and the hotel has two bars and a game lounge. An elegant spa offers a modern gym, while tropical landscaping surrounds two pools, a hot tub, and kids' pool outside. For business retreats there’s conference space and outdoor obstacle courses. The biggest downfall is the remote location -- it will take almost an hour to reach central Guangzhou by taxi or shuttle. Alternatively, the Westin Guangzhou is more centrally located, though it lacks the same polish.

The Westin Guangzhou
No.6 Linhe Middle Road, Tianhe District

With simple, modern interiors, the upscale Westin Guangzhou is located across from the Guangzhou East Station Square and CITIC Plaza. The 446 rooms and suites feature pleasant neutral tones plus floor-to-ceiling windows -- some have views of Tianhe Stadium. Starwood Preferred Guest members -- and guests in higher-priced rooms --  get free Wi-Fi and Club Lounge access with free breakfast and a few additional perks. The stylish spa has two hot tubs, a modern gym, a heated indoor pool, and an outdoor pool surrounded by skyscrapers. Dining is stylish, with five international choices, and bars. Travelers seeking a tad more luxury might want to consider the Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe, although rates will be higher.

Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich
No.988 Guangzhou Avenue Middle, Tianhe District

Decorated in a blend of Parisian and Chinese motifs, the 493-room Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich is a luxury business property overlooking the Tianhe District. Much about this glossy hotel centers on its sleek vibe -- sharp rooms and suites include soaking tubs and some have 180-degree views (weather and smog permitting, of course). City views are also available from the chic indoor pool. Dining is an elegant affair in the hotel's three restaurants, and two bars offer cocktails. For the many business travelers that flock here, there are 3,000 square meters, or about 32,000 square feet, of event space, on-site parking, and private limousines. However, there's not much to see or do nearby. The nearby Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou has decor that's just a touch more elegant, though rates are higher.

Crowne Plaza Guangzhou City Centre
No.339 Huanshi East Road, Yuexiu District

The 460-room Crowne Plaza Guangzhou City Centre is an upscale high-rise hotel located across from a mall in the busy Yuexiu District. Contemporary rooms feature nice Guangzhou views, particularly from higher floors. One- and two-bedroom suites and apartments include living rooms and Club Rooms have lounge access with free breakfast and cocktails. Three restaurants serve Asian fare and a bar lounge has Apple computers -- the hotel also has free Wi-Fi with Facebook and Google access (something not available everywhere in China). City views can also be seen from the outdoor pool and state-of-the-art gym with floor-to-ceiling windows. For those with money to spare, views are better at the Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, which offers floor-to-ceiling windows in fresher rooms.

China Hotel
No.122 Liuhua Rd, Yuexiu Qu

The 850-room China Hotel is a massive upscale property near one of Guangzhou's main train stations. The style throughout the hotel is difficult to pinpoint -- expect to see everything from Egyptian motifs to sparkly accents to 90s-era colors and fabrics throughout the property. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, coffeemakers, and desks with USB outlets. In addition to a tennis court and pool, the hotel has a modern gym with a nice selection of equipment, a hot tub, and a sauna. There are multiple dining options including a steakhouse and imitation street food, plus lots of meeting space. The location is convenient to public transportation, but guests wanting a more vibrant neighborhood may prefer the Hilton Guangzhou Tianhe, where interiors are more modern but rates are higher.
