Pulitzer Amsterdam

The Pulitzer Amsterdam is a luxury property exceptionally well located in the Canal Loop of Amsterdam. Full of historic details, the property is made up of a block of 25 restored 17th- and 18th-century canal houses and a labyrinth of inner gardens. The hotel's 225 guest rooms and suites are individually decorated with exceptional warmth and charm, plus amenities like minibars, flat-screen TVs, and bike repair kits. The hotel has an endearing restaurant, a swanky Art Deco cocktail bar, a casual cafe, and indoor and outdoor dining spaces. There's also a modern gym, but no other wellness facilities. The hotel offers Les Clefs d’Or concierge service, 24-hour room service, kid-friendly amenities, and its own mahogany tour boat. The nearby W Amsterdam has hip, design-conscious luxury, plus a rooftop pool, though it's vague corporate veneer doesn't match Pulitzer's timeless, individual style.

Hotel V Frederiksplein

This mid-range hotel is located on the outer edge of the popular Canal Ring neighborhood, just north of De Pijp. The 48 rooms are housed in four 19th-century buildings on a busy street; the charming buildings have lots of historic character, while the interior has a more eclectic and contemporary atmosphere. The lobby/lounge area has funky sculptural pieces (see the bronze bulldog and deer vases), books, magazines, and a cool 360-degree open fireplace. The front desk, as well as the business center, both feature two Apple iMac computers, and business travelers might appreciate the private meeting room. The rooms are modern with comfy bedding, flat-screen TVs, and cozy leather arm chairs, but they're quite small and lack sufficient storage space. Each has a calming monochromatic color palette, but the bare floors can make the space feel cold. Clean bathrooms are on the small side, but they have rainfall shower heads and pretty stone tiles. Some finishes throughout the hotel, such as jet-black walls, have scratches and nicks and could do with repainting.

Hotel Sebastian's

Situated on the Keizersgracht, one of the most picturesque canals in Amsterdam, Sebastian's offers an exceedingly pleasant location, which is within walking distance of the charming Jordaan District and its outdoor markets and cafes. An intimate 34-room hotel, Sebastian's oozes boutique cool, with the rich colors of purple, orange, and chocolate brown decorating its interiors. The stylish rooms feature flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, and some rooms have canal views.

Canal House

Canal House Hotel is a 23-room, upscale boutique hotel in Canal Ring's stylish Jordaan neighborhood. The lovely brick front suggests something more traditional, but the interior is flashy and fashionable. Swanky rooms feature luxe details like gorgeous mosaic-tiled bathrooms, wood floors, and rich purple fabrics. They're also packed with modern conveniences, among them Bose iPod docks and generously stocked minibars, though the open-layout bathrooms aren't for everyone. The Great Room and terrace offer stylish lounge spaces, while a chic bar serves up drinks and light fare. The hotel offers a free breakfast and room service into the evening. Travelers on the market for an upscale boutique in the neighborhood may want to compare rates with The Toren nearby.

NH Collection Amsterdam Doelen

The four-pearl NH Collection Amsterdam Doelen has a storied history, as it's one of the oldest and most well-known hotels in the city -- previous guests have included Queen Victoria and The Beatles. Its great location on the Amstel River means guests are a two-minute walk from Amsterdam’s floating tulip market and five minutes from Dam Square. Renovations in 2016 exchanged dated, old-fashioned style for contemporary elegance throughout. The 81 sophisticated rooms have espresso machines, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, and many of them have great river views, but some can be small. The only meal served is a buffet breakfast in a lovely restaurant with views over the river and buildings. A notable downside is the lack of wellness facilities. Travelers looking for a hotel with a spa might want to try the nearby Ambassade Hotel.

Budget Hotel Tourist Inn

Located in the historic city center, the two-pearl Budget Hotel Tourist Inn attracts young solo travelers and groups of friends with its modern and youthful style. Its 37 private and shared rooms are small, but they offer flat-screen TVs, lockers or safes, and free Wi-Fi, and most have air-conditioning. Some rooms have en-suite bathrooms. The hotel offers a free breakfast as well as snacks and drinks for a fee, public computers, and bike rentals. The central location is within walking distance of most major attractions and public transportation, including Amsterdam's central train station. Another alternative to consider is Hotel Fita, which is near the Van Gogh museum and offers rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers, though rates can be more expensive.

W Amsterdam

The four-and-a-half-pearl W Amsterdam is a fantastic luxury property with 238 rooms spread over two beautiful, historic buildings right in the center of Amsterdam. The hotel’s impressive features include a rooftop pool, stylish lounge, well-liked steakhouse, and a beautiful spa, among many others. Rooms are hip and funky, with quirky touches and special details incorporating Dutch culture -- we like that they're a little more restrained than some other W properties. Bathroom configurations can be a bit weird, and other drawbacks include noise from the bar into the wee hours and a pricey breakfast. While the location is great for those who want to be amid the action day and night, it may be worth comparing rates with the Conservatorium Hotel, located in the more peaceful Museum Quarter.

BaRRio Amsterdam

Located just an eight-minute walk away from the central train station and within the historic Canal Ring, this intimate, mid-range bed-and-breakfast makes a convenient home base. It's a 13-minute walk to the Anne Frank House, and all the quaint coffee shops and boutiques of the Jordaan neighborhood are a few blocks away. But despite being inside a traditional Amsterdam home, the decor here is decidedly Asian, with fans, wooden chimes and Buddha statues scattered throughout. Rooms are spacious for the price and include traditional canal house details like wood-beamed ceilings or a courtyard patio. Just note that there is no elevator, and that bathrooms have showers only. The comparable (and sometimes cheaper) Boogaard's Bed and Breakfast in the heart of the Old City is also worth considering.

Quentin Arrive Hotel

The 34-room Quentin Arrive Hotel is a budget property located at the top of Canal Ring, a seven-minute walk to Amsterdam's central station and a 12-minute walk to Dam Square. Rooms, some of which have private baths, balconies, and rainfall showers, include wall-mounted TVs and free Wi-Fi,  but they're not air-conditioned, and guests have complained about noise and spotty Wi-Fi. Budget Double and Triple Rooms share bathrooms. The lobby lounge, with its large windows, dangling chandeliers, and leather chesterfield sofas, conveys a faded grandeur. Travelers might want to also consider the Budget Hotel Tourist Inn, although it has more of a hostel atmosphere.

Mercure Amsterdam Centre Canal District
46 Noorderstraat Amsterdam-Centrum Amsterdam

Although part of a chain, Mercure Hotel Amsterdam Centre Canal District feels more like a boutique hotel thanks to its location in a series of old buildings on the outer edge of the Canal Ring neighborhood. Refurbished in April 2008, the hotel has 93 contemporary rooms, a bar, a breakfast room, and a limited number of private parking spaces available for a fee. Sure, it lacks certain amenities of a big hotel -- such as a full restaurant, meeting facilities, or fitness center -- but the boutique feel is definitely present. Communal areas include modern fixtures that coexist with the property's historical charm. Rooms are decorated in a few different color schemes and contain flat-screen TVs and minibars, though no coffeemakers or tubs. Guests who want a peaceful setting will find this hotel ideal -- far enough away from the main tourist drag and yet still close enough to Canal Ring shops, restaurants, and bars.
