Bottom Line

Relais Corte Palmieri is a mid-range boutique in the center of the old town of Gallipoli. The beautiful hotel was built in 1700 and has 21 rooms and a lovely outdoor terrace. It is within walking distance of the beach, as well as dining and nightlife options. The hotel has an excellent location, but décor and furnishings are in need of an update. There’s no elevator or on-site parking lot, and despite the free shuttle to the closest lot, hauling luggage can be a burden. Guests willing to stay further outside the city may want to consider Masseria Li Foggi, a gorgeous hotel in the countryside with a small pool.

Relais Corte Palmieri

Scene

Outdoor stairways, bougainvillea-covered walls, and beautiful terrace

The hotel is on the limestone island referred to as the old town of Gallipoli, which is linked to the mainland by a bridge. It’s still an active fishing village. Built in 1700, the hotel has some rustic architectural details (such as vaulted stone ceilings) with the addition of modern features that include porcelain tiled bathrooms. Exposed outdoor stairways and wall-climbing bougainvillea add to the Mediterranean charm. The rooftop terrace where breakfast is served is a beautiful space with lounge chairs and cacti. Some rooms have open patios while others have lovely shaded terraces with daybeds.

Location

In the old town of Gallipoli, within a short walk of bars and restaurants

The hotel is in the old town of Gallipoli, which is a great area for strolling the waterfront with bars and restaurants open during the summer. The new city of Gallipoli is also within walking distance, where guests can find more dining and nightlife options. Lecce is less than a 45-minute drive away.

Rooms

Unique details such as vaulted ceilings or patios, but outdated décor

Some rooms have vaulted ceilings and lovely outdoor patio space. The décor is in need of an update, however. Outdated white comforters with red accents and matching pillows could use a refresh, as could the kitschy wallpaper borders and tired curtains. Rooms have wicker furnishings and bathrooms with porcelain tiles and walk-in showers. Amenities include mini-fridges and TVs with satellite channels, though some rooms still have old tube-style televisions. The free Wi-Fi has mixed results.

Breakfast buffet on rooftop terrace and free shuttle to parking

One highlight that stands out in particular is the gorgeous outdoor terrace where a breakfast buffet is served in the warmer months. There is also a bar and restaurant specializing in fresh seafood. Since on-site parking is not available, the hotel has a free shuttle service via a three-wheeled vehicle. The hotel also offers passes to a private part of the beach that is a 10-minute drive away.
