Room decor is minimal and generic
The 128-room Petraria is a modest, no frills hotel set on beautiful and well-maintained grounds and gardens. There is a giant pool with a separate children's pool and access to a lovely, private beach. Kids will be entertained with a soccer field and outdoor playground. Rooms are clean and no frills with wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. This is a good, budget pick but room decor is minimal and generic and the beach is not located on property -- guests must board a free shuttle to reach the beach.
Scene
No frills, relaxed hotel
A rusty metal front gate and basic exterior don't give the best first impression, but the gardens and grounds are well cared for and a highlight of the hotel, with olive groves, pine and orange trees, and winding stone walkways. The complex is made of four separate buildings, which have simple exteriors. The restaurant is dramatic looking, with chandeliers, large round tables with black tablecloths, and red chairs and curtains. The casual atmosphere and numerous outdoor activities draw lively families and groups of friends.
Location
Located close to main town, but not near many attractions
This hotel is located off a quiet road in a mainly residential area off of Highway 39. It is a five-minute drive to downtown Cannole and a 20-minute drive to the seaside town of Otranto. It is also a 30-minute drive to the small Galatina Airport and an hour drive the Brindisi, which has the nearest major airport.
Rooms
Basic, clean rooms with minimal, outdated decor
Rooms are modest and clean with outdated touches like patterned bedspreads. Decor is simple, with dark wood furniture and stock paintings. All rooms come with one large bed, and depending on the type of room, they can also have a twin bed or small bunk bed in the corner. They are relatively spacious, but a tight squeeze if more than two people are staying within the room. Each includes a desk, flat-screen TV, and mini-fridge. The rooms also come with a secluded patio or a balcony with table and chairs, based on whether they are on the first or second floor. The bathrooms are small but clean, with tiled floors and walls, a hair dryer, and bidet. They could definitely benefit from a renovation, as appliances are starting to look old and tired.
Features
Pools, sports fields, and a formal dining room
Guests can enjoy a show at the outdoor theater, kick around a ball on the soccer field, go for a swim in one of the two pools (one which is a kids pool) or play in the tree-covered playground. There is also a beautiful beach, but guests have to take a shuttle to get there. The restaurant seems surprisingly formal and can fit up to 500 people, making it feel more like a banquet hall than a restaurant. For a more casual bite to eat, guests can grab a sandwich or snack at the poolside bar and terrace.
