Bottom Line

A rustic, family-friendly resort set in a pine grove next to an Ionian beach, Camping La Vecchia Torre offers campsites, mobile homes, and camping trailers, plus over 50 bungalows with kitchens and terraces. While lacking in typical resort amenities such as a pool or spa, the two-pearl property does have a simple private beach, sports facilities, a game room, kids activities, and an on-site restaurant. However, as one would expect from a campground, it is rustic -- guests looking for a traditional resort experience may find themselves disappointed.

Scene

Rustic and quiet campground setting in pine forest next to beach

Camping La Vecchia Torre offers a quiet and relaxing setting in a pine grove next to the Ionian Sea, with a number of campsites and bungalows that draw families, groups of friends, and couples. Recreational opportunities are plentiful and include a private beach, sports facilities, a game room, and a playground. Some of the facilities are worn, but the resort makes an effort to look attractive, with landscaped grounds and plenty of flowers. Pets are welcome and the hotel provides off-leash areas for dogs.

Location

Coastal location a short walk to an aquatic park and a 10-minute drive to Gallipoli

Camping La Vecchia Torre is on the Ionian Sea coast, a three-minute drive north of the SS 101 coastal road. The resort is a 10-minute drive northeast of Gallipoli, an old historic town with a train station, a harbor, and numerous historical buildings including the Angiono Castle. Splash Aquatic Park is next to the resort and has waterslides, pools, and aquatic play areas. The town of Parabita has plenty of bars and restaurants and is about a 20-minute drive east. Other towns in the area include Lecce, a 35-minute drive northeast of the property, and Brindisi, which takes about an hour by car. Brindisi-Salento Airport takes 75 minutes to reach by car and the hotel runs a shuttle to the airport as well as to Gallipoli, Lecce, and area beaches.

Rooms

Bungalows and campsites in a quiet pine woods setting

Camping La Vecchia Torre has over 50 bungalows and a large number of sites for motorhomes, camping trailers, and tents, all set in a quiet, shaded area of thick pine trees by the sea. Bungalows are the most comfortable option and have salmon-colored exteriors and primarily white interiors and can accommodate up to five guests. All come with kitchenettes, bathrooms, bedrooms, and shaded terraces (most face the sea). The campsites have electric outlets and shared bathrooms with hot showers. Past guests have complained of crowded campsites and maintenance issues in the bungalows and public bathrooms, and there are occasional lines to use the showers.

Features

Private beach, dedicated pet areas, tennis and soccer courts

Camping La Vecchia Torre doesn't have a swimming pool, but there is a mostly sandy beach with a few rocky patches that's good for swimming. The beach has picturesque views of Gallipoli and sunsets over the Ionian Sea, and guests can rent boats and paddle to nearby scenic beaches and charming towns such as nearby Gallipoli. Children get an outdoor playground and a kids' club, and there's a game room with billiards and air hockey. Recreational facilities include a small soccer field, tennis and beach volleyball courts, and a mini-golf course. During high season (June through September), special activities are arranged, including beach games, contests, dancing, a cabaret, outdoor movie screenings, and day-trips to area attractions. The on-site restaurant serves three meals a days and offers local Salento cuisine, with pizzas, pasta, and fresh fish from the Ionian Sea. The resort also has a bar, a grocery store, coin-operated laundry facilities, a post office, and bike, boat, car, and scooter rentals. Parking is free and there's a shuttle to nearby sights and transport hubs. Free Wi-Fi is available in common areas, but the signal can be spotty.
