Bottom Line

Set on a steep hill in the Zona Romantica, about a six-minute walk from Playa Los Muertos, the upscale Pinnacle Resorts 220 offers 42 residential-style suites with modern appliances and touches of local charm. Each of the one- to three-bedroom suites is individually decorated with Mexican accents and colorful touches. Air-conditioning, full kitchens, washer/dryers, and furnished terraces with grills come standard; some units offer ocean views. A lovely roof deck features a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the city, as well as a swim-up bar and an open-air lounge that are open to the public. There’s also a modern fitness center, but the hotel lacks a restaurant or a spa. For something with easy ocean access, Vallarta Shores offers similar residential-style suites on the beach -- but there’s no bar or gym.

Scene

An upscale, modern property that feels more like a residential apartment building than a hotel

Pinnacle Resorts 220 doesn't quite feel like a hotel. Everything about the property seems more like a posh apartment building. From the modern apartment-like suites to the limited but high-end amenities, Pinnacle Resorts 220 has the air of being at home. The small, warm, modern lobby with its waterfall, soothing water feature, and soaring ceiling with funky light fixtures sets the tone for the rest of the property. The hip vibe carries through to the suites themselves. While the suites can easily accommodate families, the property tends to see more adult guests. The beautiful rooftop infinity pool with a swim-up bar is the ideal place to relax while taking in the sunset and views of the town below. For guests who are looking for a home-away-from-home that’s still close to all the action of Puerto Vallarta, Pinnacle Resorts 220 is a great option. One of the biggest complaints is a wristband requirement, which some guests find uncomfortable and tacky.

Location

On a steep hill overlooking Puerto Vallarta’s old town, a six-minute walk to the beach

Set on a quiet cobblestone side street at the top of a steep hill in the Zona Romantica, Pinnacle Resorts 220 feels private, while still being close to all the activity of Puerto Vallarta’s lively old town. Playa Los Muertos, one of the city’s most popular beaches, is a six-minute walk away (guests can also use the resort’s funicular to get up and down the steep hill). The surrounding area is full of shops, restaurants, and nightlife, including several gay bars. It’s also where the Malecon starts, a lively oceanfront promenade that stretches for miles up the length of the city. A 15-minute walk up the Malecon brings strollers to the part of the promenade that features popular modern statues, evening food vendors, and lots of restaurants and shops. It’s also the site of the landmark Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe church. For guests who would rather drive or take a taxi, this area of the city center is about five minutes away. Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.

Rooms

Charming and modern residential-style suites with colorful decor, polished kitchens, and large furnished terraces

The suites at Pinnacle Resorts 220 are the epitome of modern elegance. Even though they’re posh and modern, there’s no lack of personality in the apartments. Each is individually decorated with one-of-kind decor. Funky wall murals and modern art are complemented by local decor pieces like colorful glass statues and wall sculptures. The pieces feel thoughtfully chosen, and the result is an air of tasteful local charm.Offering layouts that range from one to three bedrooms, all of the suites come with amenities that make them feel like home. Each suite features a polished kitchen with marble countertops and stainless steel appliances, a comfortable living area, and a huge furnished terrace with a grill, a covered bar area, and a large dining table. Inside, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and full-size washer/dryers come standard. Beds are made with luxe Egyptian cotton linens. Bathrooms offer Bio2 toiletries, hairdryers, and fluffy towels. Large closets are equipped with plush robes, safes, irons, and ironing boards. About half of the units offer ocean views, while the others overlook the city and the Sierra Madre mountains in the distance. There’s also a two-bedroom townhome that offers the same amenities spread over two floors, as well as a Royal Three-Bedroom Penthouse that has a kitchen that opens onto a sprawling terrace.

Features

A gorgeous roof terrace with a bar and a stunning infinity pool, plus a modern gym -- but no restaurant

Pinnacle Resorts 220 lacks the extensive amenities of larger resorts, but the features it does offer are lovely. One of the property’s biggest draws is its excellent rooftop, which features a gorgeous and sprawling infinity pool with stunning panoramic views of the ocean and Puerto Vallarta’s old town. It’s also the site of the thatched-roof Pinnacle Sky Bar, a lively bar and lounge that’s open to the public and particularly popular at sunset. There’s a swim-up bar side in the infinity pool, and plenty of comfortable shaded lounge areas for those who prefer to enjoy their cocktails while dry. There’s no restaurant at the hotel. Guests can opt to take advantage of the hotel’s grocery shopping service (for a fee), which will ensure that their suite kitchen comes pre-stocked. A modern gym with beautiful hardwood floors offers Techogym cardio and weight machines. A concierge is on hand to arrange tours, activities, and excursions. Pets are welcome. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Each apartment comes with one free parking space in the hotel’s covered parking garage, a rarity in the old town. The Pinnacle properties operate a small funicular that transports guests up and down the steep hill to the beach for free.
