Bottom Line

Set in the larger Los Tules condo complex, the mid-range Park Royal Los Tules hotel offers 83 colorful studios and suites with tiled kitchens, furnished balconies, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. Suites sleep up to 11 guests. The relaxed, open-air Cafe Chapultepec restaurant and bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner beside the complex’s large, freeform main pool. Seven other smaller pools are located around the property. A large and beautiful stretch of Las Glorias beach features several sun loungers and thatched palapas. Other amenities include two massage rooms, four tennis courts, a soccer pitch, and a small grocery store, but no fitness center. Wi-Fi and parking are free, but there isn't an all-inclusive option here. The Plaza Pelicanos Club Beach Resort All-Inclusive next door offers more dining and drinking options, but rooms are much smaller and more dated.

Scene

A laid-back property with a residential vibe, lots of pools, and lovely city views

The sprawling Los Tules complex is a quiet beachfront enclave that offers an oasis of peace and quiet on the city’s busiest road. Featuring over 900 palm trees, the lush and secluded grounds are home to meandering paths, traditional low-rise Mexican buildings with tile roofs, and colorful displays of Spanish poems depicted in lovely tile work. Large packs of iguanas rove freely around the property, popping up in different areas at unexpected times. The complex features 260 condo-style units in total, 83 of which make up the Park Royal Los Tules hotel. Aside from the main lobby, the hotel buildings are indistinguishable from the private condos, making the whole complex feel like one big residential community. Because the units are large and capable of sleeping up to 11 guests, the hotel is popular with families and groups. Lots of children can be found playing in the main pool, but with seven other smaller pools scattered among the buildings, it’s almost always possible to find a quiet place to relax and unwind in silence. For travelers who prefer a home-away-from-home feel to that of a traditional hotel, Park Royal Los Tules is a solid option.

Location

On a vast stretch of beautiful Las Glorias Beach, close to both downtown Puerto Vallarta and the airport

Park Royal Los Tules is in a prime location for guests who want to be close to the airport while also being a short drive from the city’s top sights. Sitting on a large stretch of Las Glorias Beach in Puerto Vallarta’s South Hotel Zone, the hotel is also on busy Highway 200, the city’s main road. But it's set far enough back to enjoy peace and quiet. The immediate surrounding area is made up of other hotels, shops, and a few restaurants. Central Puerto Vallarta is a 10- to 15-minute drive to the south. Central Puerto Vallarta is where guests will find several of the city’s most popular restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as the landmark Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe church and the famous Malecon, the city’s lively oceanfront promenade, full of public art and food vendors. Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport is a 12-minute drive to the north.

Rooms

Casual and colorful studios and suites featuring full kitchens and furnished balconies

Tile floors and simple wood furnishings combine with pops of sea-inspired colors in the relaxed studios and suites at Park Royal Los Tules. Lovely full kitchens with vibrant Mexican tile work feature stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, coffeemakers, toasters, and large water jug dispensers. Large private terraces provide dining tables and overlook the hotel’s lush grounds. Air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs come standard. Closets are equipped with safes, irons, and ironing boards, and fairly standard bathrooms offer hairdryers and Lavarino Cossa soaps and shampoo from Italy. The studios are one-room units that include small living areas with sleeper sofas next to the beds. Suites come in three sizes: Ambassador Suites have one bedroom and sleep five guests; Presidential Suites have two bedrooms and sleep seven people; and Royal Suites feature three bedrooms and sleep up to 11 guests.

Features

A casual restaurant/bar, eight pools, a large beach, tennis courts, and a grocery store -- but no all-inclusive rates

Park Royal Los Tules shares the amenities of the larger Los Tules condo complex, which offers more of the perks guests might find at a residential property than the typical resort. The small but charming Cafe Chapultepec sits at the center of the property beside the large freeform main pool. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks are served at poolside tables. Traditional Mexican decor features lots of the beautiful glass hearts that can be found in many Puerto Vallarta establishments. The pool is lined with plenty of sun loungers, though it lacks umbrellas or palapas for shade. Scattered around the large property there are seven other smaller pools and a hot tub. These pools are generally quieter than the main pool, which is popular with families, and guests might even be lucky enough to have one of the smaller pools all to themselves. The sprawling property sits on a long and lovely stretch of Las Glorias Beach, which is perfectly positioned for sunset and offers great views of central Puerto Vallarta in the distance. Though some vendors do wander through, there aren’t as many here as on many of the other beaches in the area. Two massage rooms are on hand where guests can purchase relaxing massages and wellness treatments. There’s also a paved soccer pitch and four tennis courts, which are free to use by day, but have a small fee at night to cover the cost of the lights. The small supermarket sells basic groceries and supplies. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and guests can park for free in the Los Tules private lot.
