Bottom Line

Situated in San Juan’s Condado area, The Wave Hotel is an intimate mid-range property with a boutique vibe and fresh, modern interiors. Its 47 rooms are all contemporary and coastal inspired, with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, comfy beds, and great city views -- although layouts are on the small side. The stylish rooftop is a highlight, with panoramic city views, two whirlpools, and weekly DJ nights with cocktail specials, though it is missing a proper pool. Guests are often pleasantly surprised by The Wave’s high quality given its low rates, and they love the location -- a short walk from the beach and near loads of restaurants, shops, and cafes. Travelers after something similar with a pool, could try the San Juan Water & Beach Club Hotel.

Scene

Fresh and contemporary with coastal decor elements and a boutique vibe

Set opposite a little urban park between to high traffic streets in coastal Condado, The Wave’s modern blue-and-gray exterior sets the tone for its boutique vibe. A fresh, contemporary, beach-inspired palette begins in the lobby where marble floors, framed beachscapes, and a big L-shaped sofa feel borrowed from a funky little beach house. Check-in and check-out times can crowd the space a little, but it’s otherwise fairly calm. The elevator provides access to seven levels of rooms, while stairs from the seventh floor access the rooftop -- a full floor, breezy expanse that’s been furnished in style with deck chairs, high bar seating, a choice of lounge-y setups, and two whirlpools -- all wrapped with panoramic views of the city. Guests love it up here, and during our stay, a Friday night DJ and cocktail specials attracted a fun local crowd. The Wave attracts all manner of guests from singles to couples to young families, and most seem to leave impressed -- especially considering its affordable rates.

Location

In Condado, walking distance from the beach, restaurants, and shops

The Wave is located in Condado, just a five-minute walk from Condado Beach. Plenty of restaurants and shops, including a Walgreen’s, are nearby. Sights in walking distance include Jaime Benitez Condado Lagoon National Park (three minutes) and the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art (six minutes). But most sightseeing requires a short drive. It’s around 12 minutes by car to Old San Juan where the city’s most iconic historic sites reside, and 10 minutes to popular Isla Verde Beach. Front desk staff can assist with taxis and local bus advice. Luis Munoz International Airport can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes by car.

Rooms

Spotless, vibrant, and modern rooms with mini-fridges and coffeemakers

Available in Comfort King, Classic Queen, and Double Twin categories, guest rooms aren’t huge, but they’re all fresh, bright, and modern with coastal-inspired decor blending a wave of blue hues with crisp white bedding and furniture. Framed beachy photographs on walls give a finishing touch. Beds are nice and comfy, and the contemporary look flows into bathrooms, which feature driftwood-gray tiling, lovely big mirrors, and a selection of toiletries. While these spaces are designed to maximize their square footage via cantilevered sinks and open showers, some guests still find the bathrooms cramped. Rooms are well equipped for a mid-range hotel with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards. Most rooms enjoy elevated city views -- the higher the floor, the better the outlook. That said, rooms closest to the rooftop party scene can pick up the late night music on Fridays, so light sleepers should book accordingly during weekend stays.

Features

A fabulous rooftop with whirlpools and DJ nights, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi

For some guests, the rooftop scene is reason alone to stay at The Wave. It offers great panoramic views of the city, two whirlpools, and a Friday night DJ with bar service and drinks specials. The only thing missing is a proper pool. In terms of food, a free continental breakfast is provided, although it’s pretty basic. Soft drinks are available for sale in the lobby, and reception staff will happily advise on local restaurants, beaches, and sites – there are plenty of places to eat within a short walk. A restaurant is attached to the hotel, however it was due to close during our visit. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and there's a public computer available in the lobby.
