Bottom Line

Parador El Faro is a lower-middle-range option with 69 rooms set on lush manicured grounds in a somewhat removed Aguadilla location that’s a short drive from a beach, close to some restaurants, and handy to the airport -- which is why many stay here. Guests appreciate the cleanliness and the tranquil scenic setting, but dated decor, uncomfortable beds, maintenance issues, and a lack of phones or coffeemakers in rooms cause discontent. The two pools and the open-air Puerto Rican restaurant are welcome features, although food reviews are mixed. All in all, Parador El Faro is adequate for a quick stay, but not built for lingering on the premises. Travelers seeking something more modern could try Punta Borinquen Resort.

Scene

An aging hotel on lush park-like grounds

Nestled in a lush spot that’s hidden from the main road, Parador El Faro is surrounded by greenery which offers a verdant contrast to the otherwise urban Aguadilla township. A long steep driveway travels down to the parking lot and entrance. The property doesn't make much of a first impression: Its lobby is a sparsely decorated space done up in earthy neutral tones with a couple of wood-carved armchairs and benches, and a handful of artsy details. This simplicity sets the tone for the rest of the property which unfolds across gently sloping, park-like grounds scattered with tropical trees. The shell of an old two-seater plane plonked right in the center of this area, adds a talking point. The Tres Amigos restaurant occupies an open-air pavilion with a casual rustic vibe, and green outlooks in every direction. Rooms are placed in two level buildings either side of the lobby, and in a third that’s deeper into the property. The pools are also spread out -- one sits behind the lobby, with a retro water feature that appears to be out of action up one end; and the other bigger, more popular pool sits toward the rear of the property, with a backdrop of dense greenery. The few deck chairs scattered about the pools imply El Faro doesn’t get too busy, which should please peace-seekers. There’s certainly a calm tranquillity to this place.

Location

Inland Aguadilla on the north coast, a short drive from the beach and the local airport

Parador El Faro is located in Aguadilla, a town in northwest Puerto Rico -- home to world-class surfing and beautiful beaches. However, the hotel isn't set on any of these beaches; the closest is Crash Boat Beach (a four-minute drive). Other than some casual eateries, there isn't much in the immediate area, so guests planning to explore will need a car. It’s an eight-minute drive to Rafael Hernandez Airport, and a nine-minute drive to Ruinas Faro Punta Bonrinquen. Other nearby highlights include an abandoned sugar dock, Muelle de Azucar (six minutes); Survival Beach (11 minutes); Aguadilla Mall (nine minutes); and Las Cascades Water Park (eight minutes). It’s also a 20-minute drive to Jobos Beach in Isabela -- where great surfing, plus an array of beachfront bars and restaurants are on offer. A little farther, but worthwhile, is Rincon Beach -- known for its snorkeling (a 35-minute drive).

Rooms

Clean but basic with flat-screen TVs and free toiletries -- but no coffeemakers or phones

The datedness seen in common areas follows into guests rooms, which are divided into queen and twin categories. They’re decorated in warm tones, with matching IKEA-esque wood furniture, beige walls, and brightly colored bedspreads and artwork. Work desks, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, irons, and mini ironing boards are all provided, but coffeemakers and telephones are notably absent. The free Wi-Fi is also spotty. Open closets provide plenty of hanging space, though they don't have safes. Bathrooms are finished in stone-like beige with granite vanities, standing showers, hairdryers, and a selection of toiletries. Some rooms feature small balconies, although they only allow for standing room. Maintenance issues and uncomfortable beds are common complaints, too.

Features

Two decent pools, a Puerto Rican restaurant -- but issues with Wi-Fi

Features at Parador El Faro are a short list, topped by its two outdoor pools. These are both of adequate size, with loungers provided for sunbathing. The on-site restaurant, Tres Amigos, serves all meals with an emphasis on Puerto Rican flavors, although reviews are mixed. There is also a basketball court, but it’s worn and has seen better days. Free Wi-Fi is provided, however some guests have trouble connecting. On-site parking is also free and widely available.
