This hotel has reopened following the impact of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Travelers should note that the island of Puerto Rico wassignificantly impacted by the storm. The 140-room Mayaguez Resort & Casino is a kid-friendly choice on Puerto Rico's western coast, with a lovely lazy river pool featuring a rock grotto area with waterfalls, a waterslide, and a zero-entry edge with sand. The on-site restaurants offer tasty, authentic Puerto Rican cuisine as well as international and Caribbean choices -- but items are on the pricey side. Rooms are relatively clean, with tiled floors and dark wood accents, but feel a little bare and worn, and the indoor areas as a whole could use upgrading (carpets smell musty, and we noticed a cracked ceiling in the fitness center). The biggest downside, however, may be the lack of an on-site beach; the closest stretch of sand is a five-minute drive away.

Location
On the Puerto Rico's west coast, Mayaguez offers a more laid-back pace than San Juan, with decent beaches and several low-key tourist attractions.
The resort is located on the western coast of the country, about a mile from the beach, and a 10- to 15-minute drive to various restaurants and attractions. Mayaguez is home to the University of Puerto Rico, which greatly contributes to the surrounding's culture and environment.The area gets some of the craziest weather on the island -- tornadoes, floods, and even hail can occur during the summer months. Two highways link the city with the rest of the island, and you'll probably need a rental car if you're staying in the area, especially because the only form of public transportation is a single trolley service.- 40-minute drive to Rafael Hernandez Airport
