BlueBay Villas Doradas
Calle Principal Complejo Playa Dorada Nr 538

BlueBay Villas Doradas is an adult-only, upper-middle-range, all-inclusive resort with lots of entertainment options. Whether its pool aerobics, nightly theater performances, mini-golf, or beachfront massages, there’s always something to do at BlueBay. White shag rugs, back-lit headboards, and sleek tile bathrooms give the 244 guest rooms a modern feel -- but dingy tile floors and worn bedding look less upscale. Food is mediocre throughout the hotel (if better than at some nearby all-inclusive resorts) and drinks are made with bottom-shelf liquor. Annoyingly, the hotel charges for things like beach towels, Wi-Fi, and room service. Guests looking for something a little more laid-back might prefer the nearby Blue JackTar, which is not an all-inclusive but has better food and nicer rooms.

Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Club
Lifestyle Tower Cofresi Beach #1

Part of the massive Lifestyle Holidays complex, this smaller, tranquil property attracts families and couples with its pristine pools and spacious suites. With the beach nearly a 20-minute walk from some rooms, and amenities spread throughout the sister properties, the sprawling nature of the upscale complex can be a pain, but it allows for tons of activities and a relaxed, uncrowded vacation.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort
Playa Dorada, S/n

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort is an all-inclusive, three-and-a-half-pearl property located on lovely Playa Dorada beach. Gran Ventana offers a typical, upper-middle-range all-inclusive experience, which means a steady lineup of activities, a massive main pool, and a couple of decent dining options. The resort’s 506 rooms have generic decor and the limited Wi-Fi will be annoying for some, but those seeking a simple, no-fuss vacation are likely to be satisfied. It’s worth comparing amenities and rates with Be Live Collection Marien.

Occidental Caribbean Village Playa Dorada
Calle Principal Playa Dorada, PO Box 653

One of 15 resorts located inside the safe Playa Dorada complex, the Puerto Plata Village is about a 10-minute walk off the beach, surrounded by a golf course. Despite a spirited staff -- many of whom are there to sell time-shares, the resort's primary moneymaker -- the resort's food, rooms, and features are all bested by the nearby Grand Paradise resort.

Apartments Costambar
Calle Rey Fernando 8, Costambar

ApartHotel Costambar is a modest, two-and-a-half-pearl property located across the street from lovely Playa Costambar beach. The hotel’s 18 one- and two-bedroom apartments are basic but tidy, offering kitchenettes and separate living areas. There’s an uncrowded outdoor pool on-site and the beach is less than a one-minute walk away. The peaceful surrounding neighborhood is a welcome change of pace for guests wanting to escape the crowds, but those looking for action may find it too quiet. Travelers seeking a more high-energy scene might prefer Hotel Villa Taina in Cabarete, though rates are a step up.

Casa Colonial Beach & Spa
Playa Dorada

Casa Colonial Beach and Spa is a swish, four-pearl property located on Playa Dorada beach. The hotel’s 50 rooms exude timeless style, featuring decor inspired by colonial-era aesthetics. Amenities, which include a spa, two restaurants and a pair of bars, plus a rooftop pool, are equally chic -- most are on the smaller side, but this mainly just enhances the hotel’s intimate feel. While you might hear some noise from the busy resorts nearby and service is sometimes a bit off, Casa Colonial is by far the most luxurious option in Puerto Plata. Guests may want to compare rates and amenities with Blue JackTar, but it’s not as fancy.

The Tropical at Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort
Columbus Torre 1, Playa Cofresi

Part of the massive Lifestyle Holidays complex, The Tropical boasts the closest location to the beach. Features here are plentiful and most -- including the tranquil spa and the kids’ club -- are conveniently found on the resort’s grounds. For additional dining options and nightlife, however, guests must make the trek to the neighboring sister properties. While standard rooms feel a bit dated, with flat-panel TVs, suites have more of an upscale vibe with modern kitchens and technology.

Playabachata Resort
Carretera Navarrete, Bahia de Maimon

This budget-friendly property attracts families, couples, and solo travelers with its many features and affordable rates. Rooms are outdated and there are numerous complaints about the food being bland, but those seeking an inexpensive getaway can enjoy the hotel’s large beach and numerous pools.

Blue JackTar
Calle Principal Playa Dorada, Playa Dorada

While not quite a luxury hotel, the upscale, family-friendly Blue JackTar is a quiet property located on the golf course in Puerto Plata’s gated Playa Dorada complex. Although it’s an older resort, Blue JackTar has been completely refreshed and updated. Spacious rooms have a casual, beachy vibe, though none of them have beach views. The hotel’s pool is large and rarely crowded, probably because guests prefer the gorgeous daybeds on the beach. The main restaurant, Green Jack, serves an international menu with a few Dominican specialities -- and might just be the best place to have dinner in all of Playa Dorada. A beachfront restaurant, Jack's Kite and Grill, was added after our visit. As far as freebies go, there’s free parking, Wi-Fi, and daily breakfast. Travelers looking for something a bit more romantic might prefer BlueBay Villas Doradas, which is an adult-only property within Playa Dorada.

Club Villas Jazmin
Cristobal Colon-Costambar

Located in the tiny village of Costambar, just west of Puerto Plata, Club VIllas Jazmin is a small, quiet hotel with 20 apartment-style units. This budget property is ideal for travelers seeking an authentic stay in the Dominican Republic in lieu of a tourist-oriented hotel stay in Puerto Plata. This means guests can expect regular power outages, little hot water, and a slower pace of life (as in, the Wi-Fi barely exists) while staying here. The beach is a short stroll from the hotel, and there is a small pool and tennis courts, but guests will need to rent a car or rely on taxis to do anything else in the area. For direct beach access, compare rates at The Tropical at Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort nearby.
