Bottom Line

The upscale 55-room Hotel Piz Galin covers every base when it comes to the kids -- from a separate pool and menus to activities and performances all geared towards the little ones. The grown-ups do have a spa to relax in, and the indoor and outdoor pools are a hotel highlight. The location is also great for activities, with a popular ski resort next door. Rooms are average, but clean and comfortable, and some have mountain views. All in all, it's excellent for families with younger children, though perhaps it has more limited appeal for those without.

Scene

Children's fairytale meets traditional Alpine chalet

The family-run Hotel Piz Galin dates back to the great grandfather who first invested in building lodgings in 1905, and Hotel Piz Galin has been renovated and added to ever since. Approaching the hotel, you know you're in for something a little different -- the exterior is part fairytale palace, part Alpine lodge, festooned with explosions of colorful flowers and scattered with potted shrubbery. Stepping into the lobby the theme continues, blending traditional carved wood fixtures and homey patterned fabrics with an eclectic collection of antique toys, quirky knick-knacks, and vintage curios. The ambience of the hotel is fun and informal, with a real focus on appealing to the younger guests, though with a more sensible side for the grown ups. That said, during busier time of the year it might feel like the kids have the run of the place.

Location

Set in the center of Andalo village, next to Paganella ski resort

Grand Hotel Piz Galin is located in the middle of Andalo village, set in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites in Northern Italy. The nearest railway station is in Trento, about 40 minutes' drive away -- shuttle buses bring guests directly to the hotel -- while Dolomiti Airport is an hour away by car. The hotel is also next to the the ski resort of Paganella, with over 30 miles of trails. Parking at Hotel Piz Galin is free.

Rooms

Simple rooms, many with balconies and gorgeous mountain views

Standard Rooms are simply decorated in a modern style with basic pinewood furnishings and wooden floors. Suites are somewhat more elegant with more interesting architecture like a window between the bedroom and bathroom and recessed wood ceilings. All rooms have mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs with DVD players, as well as modern bathrooms with hairdryers. The spacious Family Room has double sinks and a glass encased shower. Each adult gets a wellness set with a swimming towel and bathrobe free of charge. Most rooms also extend to furnished, wooden balconies with views of Andalo village and mountains in the distance.

Features

Leisure and relaxation facilities for all ages, but especially the kids

The hotel's highlight is the long heated indoor pool, with corner cavern hot tub, waterfall fountain, and pyramid skylight. The pool also extends into the garden and is surrounded by decking and a lawn, complete with sun loungers. As well as a separate indoor pool for kids, there is an extensive outdoor play area with a trampoline and an indoor playroom for children, as well as a range of activity programs throughout the year. Adults can relax in the spa, with various baths, saunas, and treatment rooms. The hotel restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with special menus for kids -- the restaurant, however, is underground with no natural light.
