Situated on a park-like property, this luxury hotel offers plush low-key accommodations in a cluster of traditionally styled buildings, the oldest of which (the original "mas") dates back to the 18th century. Although their decor ranges from French-country chic to contemporary casual, all 23 rooms feature high-end finishes plus perks like minibars, L'Occitane toiletries, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi. A free shuttle will carry guests to Saint-Tropez or nearby beaches, but fabulous features -- including a marble-edged pool, pitching green and tennis courts -- encourage them to relax on-site. Posh dining areas and an inviting lounge provide other excuses to linger; however, if a full-service spa or Michelin-starred restaurant is on your wish list, book a room at Villa Belrose instead.
Scene
Low-key luxury in a peaceful rural setting
Centered around an 18th-century manor, Le Mas de Chastelas opened as a hotel more than 50 years ago, and has hosted many French celebrities in the decades since -- Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu and Serge Gainsbourg among them. Nevertheless, the atmosphere here is definitely more “quiet classic” than “glitzy glam.” Outside, sprawling lawns and statue-studded gardens set a sophisticated yet relaxed tone that carries on into The Bastide, where country-style antiques are offset by oil paintings and carefully curated objets d’art. Home to the property's reception and restaurant, this building also contains a cozy seating area. This spot, complete with a fireplace, a grand piano and a collection of white rolled-arm sofas, makes an obvious gathering place for an assortment of discerning guests.
Location
On lushly landscaped grounds, 10 minutes west of Saint-Tropez
Occupying more than five idyllic acres with gardens, sloping lawns and vineyard views, this hotel promises a quiet escape far from maddening crowds. That said, guests needn’t feel isolated: Gassin, a photogenic hilltop village, is just a seven-minute drive away while Saint-Tropez itself is 10 minutes. Moreover, the legendary Plage de Pampelonne can reached by car (or the hotel’s free shuttle bus) in 15 minutes, and many popular Côte d'Azur destinations are within day-tripping distance. Guests arriving by air can drive in from Nice or Marseille; however, the Toulon-Hyères Airport, being under an hour away, is considerably closer. The nearest Eurostar station (Saint-Raphaël-Valescure) is a 55-minute drive. Ground transport for any of these can be arranged on-site; if you’ve got your own vehicle, free parking is also available.- Seven-minute drive to Gassin
Rooms
Tasteful rooms in several sizes and styles
The property's neutral-toned guest rooms, many of them boasting private terraces or balconies, are located in a trio of buildings: the quintessentially French Bastide (Le Mas’ original structure), plus two newer Italian-style villas -- The Palladian (in the park) and The Tuscan (overlooking the hotel entrance). From standard rooms to sprawling two-bedroom suites, all include individually controlled air-conditioning, minibars, electronic safes, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms that feature either separate showers and soaker tubs or shower/tub combinations along with fluffy robes and lovely L'Occitane toiletries. Choices in The Bastide and Palladian also share a rustic-refined decor like that found in the common areas (picture four-poster or cornet-style canopy beds topped with elegant white linens and balanced by cottage-y antiques and terra-cotta floors). Tuscan ones, conversely, have a more contemporary look with platform beds, angular furnishings and open-plan bathrooms. If you’re traveling en famille, note that kid-friendly configurations and on-request cribs are available. The hotel has accessible rooms for guests with mobility limitations, too.
Features
Swimming, golfing and tennis facilities -- but no spa or fitness center
Le Mas de Chastelas is admittedly missing some of the perks you might typically expect in a luxury retreat: namely a spa and fitness center. On the upside, the grounds -- beautifully landscaped and dotted with intimate pavilions -- have a serenity-inducing quality, while a pair of tennis courts and adjacent five-hole golf green offer ample opportunities for exercise (rackets can be borrowed for the former, and private lessons can be arranged at the latter). On-site you’ll also find a sizable heated pool with a marble patio, umbrella-shaded loungers, plus a romantic poolside bar and dining area where a pricey breakfast buffet is laid out each morning. There’s a lovely little dining room inside as well, which serves deceptively simple seasonal dishes (Provençal lamb and guinea fowl with aubergine caviar are specialities). For guests combining business with pleasure -- or those hosting social functions -- the hotel has A/V-equipped event space for up to 18 in the Bertaud Lounge. Other features include around-the-clock reception with a multilingual staff; concierge, dry-cleaning/laundry and turndown services; on-request babysitting; free newspapers in the lobby; and free Wi-Fi throughout.
