This peaceful hideaway provides a respite from the party-till-dawn scene that's typical of Saint-Tropez. Located on a two-lane country road, the four-pearl property -- with just 13 rooms and suites -- is run like a bed-and-breakfast by a husband-and-wife team known for giving guests individual attention and employing a top-notch staff. Rooms feature private terraces and pergolas looking out to the magnificent pool and grounds, flat-screen TVs, and L'Occitane en Provence products. A fantastic breakfast is exquisitely presented but it's not included in the rate, and there's no on-site restaurant, bar, or spa. For a boutique hotel with those three features, consider Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez.
Scene
Quiet hilltop Cote d’Azur sanctuary with splendid grounds that's a step out of the fray
The high concrete wall surrounding Hôtel Villa Cosy, with lush ivy spilling over the top and palm fronds jutting out, gives the impression that what's contained inside is exclusive, upscale, and intimate. It's no surprise, then, to find a bucolic French Riviera haven beyond the gate. This gem's grounds are immaculately kept, with century-old plane trees, manicured landscaping, and villas with neat terra-cotta-tile roofs. The simple design of outdoor space -- including the smooth teak that envelopes the heavenly pool -- is inspired by nature and complements the azure Cote d’Azur sky. These soothing elements are picked up in the lobby, but fusing them with chichi decor, such as Atomic Age armchairs and postmodern art, is slightly jarring. But the star attraction is an illuminated wine cellar with a spiral staircase descending into a sea of bottles. Given the uber-romantic setting, honeymooners often book stays at Hôtel Villa Cosy, as do travelers who want to be near the hubbub of Saint-Tropez rather than in the middle of it.
Location
Walking distance to town and a quick drive to Saint-Tropez's sceney restaurants, bars, and beaches
Nestled on a two-lane country road, Hôtel Villa Cosy is located in a sleepy residential neighborhood less than a mile from the glitzy town. It's a 15-minute walk or less to Vieux Port, La Ponche, and La Citadelle, or to Place des Lices's open-air market. Driving to Plage de Bouillabaisse and Plage de Pampelonne takes no longer. Plan on 90 minutes to reach Cote d’Azur Airport and a 75-minute ride to Gare de Saint-Raphaël Valescure (Eurostar). - Seven-minute walk to Place des Lices
Rooms
Personal touches and upscale details like private terraces and terrycloth robes, but lacking a cozy vibe
True to Hôtel Villa Cosy's reputation for personal touches, welcome trays with chocolates, tubes of shea butter cream and lip balm, and a handwritten note await guests upon arrival. But compared to the dreamy pool area (where less is more reads as minimalist chic), rooms are missing a shot of color and decorative flair. While a few details evoke understated elegance, such as sateen damask-striped linens and velvet drapes in rich chocolate brown, there aren't many accents to warm up the hard surfaces and neutral palette. That said, pergolas and private terraces with garden and pool views are posh, and units have flat-screen TVs, safes, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. But minibars are spare -- even in suites -- and there are no iPod docks. Coffeemakers and electric kettles are available on request. Bathrooms come stocked with terrycloth robes, slippers, and L'Occitane en Provence products, and all have heated towel racks and walk-in showers with handheld showerheads. Suites are similarly decorated yet convey a more luxurious atmosphere, with additional flat-screen TVs and whirlpools. The grandest Suite has vaulted ceilings, a spacious separate living room, and a veranda with a large table for group dining alfresco.
Features
Fabulous pool, French breakfast, and free Wi-Fi -- but no on-site restaurant, bar, or spa
The hub of the hotel,- and its prettiest space, is the 50-foot heated pool in the middle of the property. It's a modern pool scene, and a raised sunbed caps off one end, facing rows of chaise lounges and tables with umbrellas at the other. The hotel has a lovely continental breakfast (for a fee), a "petit dejeuner" with a basket of boulangerie items (including Lenotre croissants), jams, juice, coffee, and Mariage Freres teas. Twenty-four-hour room service offers light meals with fresh ingredients (a house favorite is the croque madame) as well as libations from the snazzy lobby cellar, but the hotel doesn't have an on-site restaurant or bar. And, while there's an outdoor shower and concierge services can book massages, there's no full-service spa.Hotel Villa Cosy has free Wi-Fi throughout and valet parking, and welcomes small pets for an additional nightly charge.
