Located in the historic center of Avignon, the upper-middle-range Hotel de l’Horloge has a clubby and classically elegant look, thanks in part to its 19th-century building. Its 66 cozy rooms have flat-screen TVs and minibars, and some have terraces and espresso-makers. There's a comfy library lounge and a breakfast room with a lovely glass-enclosed veranda, but there's no restaurant, bar, or fitness center. Breakfast is available for a fee, along with free Wi-Fi. While its rates are competitive, travelers could compare rates with the Hotel Central, which has a brighter, airier feel.
Scene
Cozy and elegant hotel inside the historic ramparts
Hotel de l’Horloge occupies a classic, 19th-century building with wrought-iron balconies and terraces. With lots of warm woods -- in the front desk, cabinets, and stairway -- and cozy leather chairs and couches, the interior aims for maximum coziness. The ultimate example is the library lounge off the lobby, complete with a fireplace and teddy bears ready for snuggling. Another public space is the breakfast room, whose high-backed chocolate-colored leather chairs pull up to tables with white tablecloths. But the most striking space could be the hotel's lovely glass veranda with charming wrought-iron chairs and round wooden tables; here guests can take in breakfast and the passing street scene. Reasonably priced for its central location, the hotel draws tourists, especially couples, friends traveling together, and families.
Location
Located inside the ancient city ramparts near sights, restaurants, and shopping
Hotel de l’Horloge is within the historic city center, with doors that open out onto the Place de l’Horloge, with several restaurants, cafes, and shops nearby. Museums are less than a 10-minute walk away, while the Palais des Papes is a four-minute walk from the hotel, and the Avignon Cathedral is a five-minute walk away. The ruins of Pont Saint-Benezet are about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Avignon-Caumont Airport is a 25-minute drive away.
Rooms
Appealing rooms with wrought-iron beds, minibars, and balconies in some
Decorated in dark masculine hues, Hotel de l'Horloge's 66 rooms are an appealing mix of wood and iron. All have wrought-iron beds with white linens and gray bed runners -- with either wood floors or carpeting. Larger rooms add small sitting areas with leather or wicker chairs. Tradition Rooms are the smallest, and they can feel cramped with little storage space. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, safes, and air-conditioning (though past guests have complained about weak air flow). Most rooms have coffee- and tea-making facilities. Suites and Privilege Rooms include espresso makers. Some rooms have private, furnished terraces and one Privilege Room offers views of Palais des Papes. Bathrooms are a bit snug but have tiled shower/tub combos and heated towel racks. Damana toiletries and hairdryers are provided.
Features
Varied breakfast buffet, cozy lounge that doubles as a meeting room, and free Wi-Fi
Hotel de l’Horloge is advertised as a four-pearl property, but as it lacks features such as a restaurant, bar, or gym, it doesn't quite make the grade. It does, however, offer breakfast, which varies over the seasons to include cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, pastries, cereals, boiled eggs, and a hot buffet, and while it makes an effort to use local and organic products, it's pricey. It can be delivered to rooms, or guests can dine in the property's pretty glassed-in veranda. Children under 12 can eat for free. The library lounge -- with couches, a fireplace, books, teddy bears for kids, and a flat-screen TV -- serves as a cozy gathering spot and doubles as a meeting room. Bottles of wine can be purchased in the lobby. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
