Bottom Line

Located just below Prague Castle, the four-pearl Vintage Design Hotel Sax has a stylish retro look reminiscent of the '60s, and it offers plenty of amenities. The property's 22 guest rooms are a contemporary mix of funky retro and modish decor and have minibars, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and bathrooms with high-end toiletries. Some even have laptops or balconies, though most lack coffee- and tea-making facilities. Hotel freebies are few as most features cost a fee, including the spa, hot tub, gym, sauna, and DVD library. There’s no on-site restaurant, but the hotel does offer a free breakfast and tea and coffee throughout the day. Travelers could also consider the nearby Hotel Three Storks, which has an on-site restaurant and in-room tea/coffee-making facilities, but lacks spa and fitness facilities.

Scene

Retro-style boutique hotel with stylish, funky decor

There's a fun and lighthearted '60s retro theme permeating the interiors of this boutique hotel. The lobby has a funky sleek white desk and a mix of dizzying patterned walls -- some feature bright colors, while others are black-and-white. Public areas like hallways, the breakfast room, and the small bar are filled with cool vintage pieces like old TV box sets, mod-style furniture, displays of vintage china sets, vases, and old toys, as well as colorful wallpaper or beaded curtains. Guests will certainly be entertained by the stylish, throwback decor throughout the entire property. The clientele here is overwhelmingly couples attracted by the cool design and solid selection of amenities.

Location

Within walking distance of the city center, Prague Castle, and restaurants and bars

This hotel has a decent location, even though it’s a bit of a hike away from the Old Town. Some nearby attractions include the Monastery Infant Jesus of Prague (five-minute walk away), Prague Castle (a 10-minute walk away), and Charles Bridge (a 12-minute walk). Old Town is a bit farther, but can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot. Several restaurants and bars can be found on surrounding streets, and there’s a bus stop that’s a minutes’ walk away. It’s a 22-minute drive to Vaclav Havel Airport, or about 40 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Sleek rooms with stylish vintage decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and DVD players

With bright patterned wallpaper, sleek white furniture, and vintage decorative pieces like lamps, vases, or mirrors, guest rooms here feature funky retro and modish decor. Vintage-style chairs and '60s motifs are a focal point. Most rooms have burnt orange bedding and brown carpet. Despite the retro style, amenities are modern and include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, safes, DVD players, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. Standard Rooms also have laptops, while Superior Deluxe Rooms and Top View Rooms include balconies. Rooms on the higher floors have views of Prague and Lesser Town. Most rooms lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, though Design Suites have retro-style espresso-makers. Design Suites are well-suited for families as there are separate living rooms, and guests can rent toy boxes for kids. White tiled bathrooms offer shower/tub combos or showers, Yves Rocher toiletries, and hairdryers.

Features

Extensive wellness facilities, lobby bar, meeting room, and DVD library -- but extra fees can apply

Though the hotel has plenty of amenities, many tend to have a fee associated with them. One of the highlights here is the spa, which offers massages, a hot tub, and a sauna -- but use of the facilities incurs an extra fee. The hotel’s small gym, which includes a few cardio and weight machines, also requires a fee to use. As for dining features, there’s no on-site restaurant, but the hotel does offer a free basic breakfast buffet with sausage, bacon, mushrooms, tuna, pastries, and coffee. A la carte breakfast is available for a fee and includes hot items, plus breakfast can also be delivered to rooms or served on the terrace (for an additional fee). There’s a lobby bar that serves drinks, as well as a coffee room where guests can enjoy free tea and coffee (plus there's a microwave available for use). Business travelers are catered to with free Wi-Fi throughout the property, a public computer, and a single meeting room that fits up to six people. There’s an extensive DVD library with an access fee or fee per rental. Airport or train transportation can be set up for a fee. Parking is available for a fee in front of the hotel, in a nearby garage, or a nearby parking lot, but it has car size limits and should be reserved beforehand.
