Bottom Line

The 336-room, three-pearl Orea Hotel Pyramida is in Prague 6, an eight-minute walk from Strahov Monastery. The property is a pleasant option for those who don't need to be in the historic heart of the city. Rooms are simple and modern, and feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and electric kettles. There are more features here than you'll find in the middle of the Old Town, including a modern fitness center, indoor pool, two restaurants, and a lobby bar. A buffet breakfast is included in the rates, and the Italian restaurant serves lunches and evening meals. Prices are competitive, but guests looking to be closer to the old town might try Lindner Hotel, which has an outdoor terrace (but higher rates).

Orea Hotel Pyramida

Scene

Simple hotel for a range of travelers who prize lower rates over central location

The Orea Pyramida was opened in 2007 and ticks the necessary boxes for travelers who don't need to be right in the buzz of the city center. That being said, while it's a bit more peaceful out here, the hotel isn't exactly the most character-filled option that we've seen in Prague. Decor is pleasant, but some of the common areas can look a little dated, and many of the spaces have the charm of an airport or mall. Among all of the muted tones and older tilework, you'll see just a splash of bold color in places like the Franz Kafka Bar (a popular spot for guests to unwind with a local beer after a day of sightseeing). The hotel does pack in more features than its competitors in the Old Town, including additions like a spa and pool, which can make it a decent value. As it's near a tram and only an eight-minute walk from Strahov Monastery, plenty of vacationing couples pass through, but the conference facilities and additional features make it popular for all types of travelers, including business clients and families.

Location

In Prague 6, outside of the Old Town and an eight-minute walk to Strahov Monastery

The hotel is located in Prague 6, which is well outside of Prague's Old Town, but reasonably close to other major sights. It's only an eight-minute walk to photo-worthy Strahov Monastery, and -- for the ambitious -- a scenic 20-minute walk to St. Vitus' Cathedral and Prague Castle (passing several historic palaces along the way). Getting into the Old Town is easy enough, as the Malovanka Tram stop is just outside of the hotel. The Jewish Quarter and its historic cemetery is a 20-minute journey by using the tram and walking. It's also around a 20-minute trip to iconic Wenceslas Square by combining the tram and metro. Expect a 45-minute journey on public transportation to reach Vaclav Havel International Airport, which can also be reached by car or cab in around 20 minutes.

Rooms

Simple rooms with neutral decor, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi; some with shared terraces

The hotel has 336 rooms and suites, all of which are done in the same neutrally modern style. Expect to see neutral hues and light IKEA-style furniture plus dark patterned carpets. The padded headboards add a softer element to the style, and there are just a few landscape prints hanging on the walls. Otherwise, the look is entirely plain. Standard features include air-conditioning, electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs with satellite and pay-per-view channels. Higher category units have separate seating areas, Nespresso machines, and a free drink in the bar. Some units on upper floors have shared terraces, and Executive Rooms are located on a private floor with access to fresh fruit and free tea and coffee. Rooms mostly stay quiet, but front facing rooms sometimes catch traffic noise from the highway nearby during peak times. Bathrooms have fully tiled floors and surrounds, with mosaic accent tiling. Each has a shower stall, modern fixtures and fittings, a wall-mounted hairdryer, decent counter space, and free toiletries. Some higher-category rooms add bidets, bathrobes, and slippers.

Features

Bar and Italian restaurant, free buffet breakfast, indoor pool, and well-equipped fitness center

While it's pretty bland from a style perspective, the features here outpace what's found at many other Prague hotels, particularly those in the city center. The Bohemia serves the free breakfast and includes a range of hot and cold options, such as meats, cheeses, pastries, and eggs. There's also an Italian restaurant, though some guests miss the lack of local dishes. The Franz Kafka Bar also serves snacks and drinks, and is a fine enough place to relax after a day of sightseeing. Guests have free access to the indoor pool and the sauna, and there's a spacious fitness center with a good selection of cardio machines and free weights. Spa treatments can also be booked. Private parking is available and staff is happy to assist with tours, tickets, and airport transfers (for a fee). The hotel has a business center and conference facilities, plus a concierge. Laundry and dry cleaning are available for a fee, and there's an ATM in the lobby. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the property.
