A hike from Old Town and major attractions
This upscale, boutique-style hotel is part of Mamaison Hotels & Residences, a small Eastern European/Russian chain. It's beautifully located in Smichov by the Vltava River -- some of its 62 rooms and 18 suites have river views -- but getting to Old Town requires a tram ride or a trek on foot. The hotel’s restaurant serves a buffet breakfast (for an additional fee), and the lounge bar is open late and serves light snacks. The hotel caters to business travelers, with meeting rooms and a buffet lunch. Travelers may also want to consider the more romantic and more centrally located Archibald at the Charles Bridge, though rates are slightly higher.
Scene
Elegant decor saturated in red
The hotel has an elegant, Art Nouveau-style design that’s heavy on red. There are red walls, red carpeting, and red curtains. The high-ceilinged rooms are dominated by crystal chandeliers but the look is more sophisticated than stuffy. Light streams in from a pair of floor-to-ceiling windows in the classically furnished lobby bar, with wood paneling and white chairs with red accent pillows. The lower-level restaurant has no windows, but a glass ceiling and a projection of the river on one of the walls adds brightness. The decor and colors create a romantic atmosphere for couples, but its proximity to the city's business districts and the hotel meeting rooms can suit business travelers too.
Location
On the west bank of the Vltava River, close to the Dancing House and near trams
The hotel is located on a busy main road on the Vltava River. Some attractions are nearby, including the Vlado Milunić- and Frank Gehry-designed Dancing House, which is a 10-minute walk away, and the National Theatre, which is 15 minutes on foot. But Prague's main attractions require more of a hike: Charles Bridge and Old Town can be reached by tram in about 15 to 20 minutes, or a 30-minute walk. It’s a 20-minute drive to the Vaclav Havel Airport, but it takes about an hour via public transportation. Airport transfers are available from the hotel for an extra fee.
Rooms
Modern and sophisticated decor; some rooms have river views
The rooms and 18 suites look more modern than the rest of the hotel, with hardwood floors and slim, wood furniture. Striped fabrics add a jaunty touch. The colors schemes are, for the most part, red, except for the Superior Rooms, which have a sophisticated navy-and-cream color scheme, and the Suites, which are decorated in gold and beige. All rooms come equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, laptop-size safes, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms have double vessel sinks, hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and shower/tub combos, while the Superior Rooms and Suites have separate showers and bathtubs. Some rooms have river views, with the most impressive views from the Skylight Suite.
