Bottom Line

The mid-range Hotel Saint George offers attractive rates in a central Prague location that’s a brief walk from the I.P. Pavlova transportation hub. It’s near many restaurants and within walking distance of attractions like Wenceslas Square, National Museum, and Prague State Opera, but Old Town Square is a bit far. Its 57 rooms are basic but functional and include minibars and safes. The breakfast buffet is optional but reasonably priced, and there's also a small bar -- but no restaurant on-site. The small fitness center includes a whirlpool and sauna (for a fee), and though Wi-Fi is free, many guests report it to be spotty. Budget-conscious travelers will find this hotel a solid choice, but for slightly higher rates, the upper-middle-range Pure White offers recently-renovated rooms and a free breakfast buffet.

Hotel Saint George

Scene

Simple hotel busy with young leisure tourists and other budget-conscious travelers

The hotel’s reasonable rates and location near transportation hubs attract a diverse mix of mostly leisure travelers, including many students from different nationalities. As such, the hotel stays busy and can get a bit loud at times with groups of young travelers mingling. By contrast, the hotel lobby exudes a more formal and traditional ambiance, with white marble floors, Oriental-style rugs, and crimson and blue striped sofas and armchairs in both the reception area and an adjacent parlor. Antiques and traditional artwork decorate the space, and three antique clocks above the wooden front desk display times in various parts of the world. The busy breakfast area is equally classy, featuring clay-colored tile, exposed brick, black leather upholstered chairs, and separate rooms with seating. The small bar can get busy in the evenings, with guests playing billiards in the adjacent room while enjoying glasses of wine.

Location

Near the I.P. Pavlova transportation hub, within walking distance of several attractions

The Hotel Saint George is set in an 18th-century building on the corner of a busy road that’s lined with several other hotels. Many restaurants are nearby, with the closest being a one-minute walk. The I.P. Pavlova transportation hub is a five-minute walk away, making public transit connections to various attractions relatively quick and easy. The Prague State Opera, Charles Square, and the National Museum are under a 15-minute walk, while Wenceslas Square is about a 20-minute walk away. Old Town Square is around 20 minutes away via public transit or 25 minutes on foot, while both Charles Bridge and Prague Castle are 25 minutes via public transit. Vaclav Havel Airport can be reached in around 25 to 35 minutes by car, or 45 minutes via public transit.

Rooms

Basic but functional decor, with minibars, safes, free Wi-Fi, and nice bathrooms

The rooms are basic but functional, with off-white walls, gold drapes, and light brown carpet. The white linens are covered by orange and white bed throws or pink and white bedspreads. The matching wood furniture is of good quality and includes headboards, nightstands, desks, armoires, and a single upholstered chair. Contemporary art adds splashes of color. But there are no dressers to store clothing. Rooms are average in size by European standards, and come in Standard Single, Double, and Triple (three twins) bed options. Bathrooms are rather generic, with beige tiling, white ceramic sinks, and small oval shower inserts with frosted glass doors. Some bathrooms include both toilets and bidets.

The rooms are generally clean and well maintained, but some past guests have complained of housekeeping and maintenance problems including stained carpets and issues with the AC units. Noise from the busy road can be heard, but it's not significant; rooms on higher floors tend to be quieter. (Student groups that sometimes frequent the hotel can be a bit loud.) Standard amenities include minibars, flat-screen TVs, safes, phones, and free Wi-Fi that many guests report to be spotty. There are no coffeemakers.

Features

Breakfast, bar, concierge, free Wi-Fi, and fitness center with whirlpool and sauna

Hotel Saint George has some extra features that add to its value, but it's notably missing others that you'd expect from a mid-range hotel. An expanded continental breakfast is served daily in a cozy breakfast area. The breakfast is not included in standard rates, but it's reasonably priced and included in many packages the hotel offers. There's a vending machine that sells snacks and drinks, but no food service is available after breakfast. A small, on-site bar focuses on wine and tea selections and includes an adjacent pool table.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, but many guests report it to be spotty. A computer station with Internet access in the lobby serves as the business center. The limited fitness area offers a few pieces of cardio and weight-training equipment and some free weights, as well as a sauna and whirlpool. Use of the sauna requires a surcharge, however. Concierge as well as valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available, and the hotel has a small place to park cars for a fee. This hotel is pet friendly and nonsmoking.
