Bottom Line

The quaint three-pearl Hotel Monastery shares a medieval garden with Strahov Monastery, a landmark attraction in central Prague that was founded in 1142. The property is within walking distance to Prague Castle and it borders Petrin Park -- which has spectacular views over the historic Old Town area -- making it a great spot for tourists looking to immerse themselves in local history. The 12 rooms have unique architectural details, free Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms, but only the top-floor lofts have significant views. This small hotel lacks 24-hour reception and there are few facilities, other than the dining lounge where a free, quality breakfast buffet is served. Note that there's no elevator. For travelers looking to be near Old Town, it's worth checking out the Unitas Hotel, an upscale boutique with a monastic history.

Scene

Small hotel in the gardens of a 12th-century monastery

Founded in 1142 by the Premonstratensians (a Roman Catholic religious order), one of the Strahov Monastery's 17th-century additions now houses the Hotel Monastery. Reproductions of paintings adorn the plaster walls and the high vaulted ceilings make for bright interiors, despite the cobbled brick floors and limited windows. Apart from the halls, there's little more than a small reception desk and a breakfast room here. The main attraction is across the gardens, where Gothic and Baroque styles converge after multiple fires caused the monastery to rebuild more than once. The building houses two grand libraries in its restored Theological Hall and equally impressive Philosophical Hall, home to volumes that are more than 800 years old. Though the front desk is unmanned at night, guests report that entering and leaving the hotel is explained well. The property's historical charm and lovely views of Prague make it best suited to vacationing couples, but Family Rooms are available as well.

Location

In the gardens of Strahov Monastery, a 15-minute walk to Prague Castle

Hotel Monastery is located inside the garden grounds of the 12th century Strahov Monastery. Shops, restaurants, and many attractions are within walking distance, but it's a 40-minute walk to the Old Town area. However, it's just a five-minute walk to the Pohorelec tram stop for easy access across the city. Popular destinations such as Old Town and Wenceslas Square can be reached in about 20 to 30 minutes by tram. Bordering the grounds, Petrin Park is a major attraction for walking amid fruit trees and taking in the views of Prague from its bucolic hilltop. There is a large open square on the hill surrounded by baroque houses above the city that is part of the main access road to Prague Castle, which is a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms

Restored rooms with mixed decor, flat-screen TVs, and minibars

There are a total of 12 rooms at the Hotel Monastery, which feature streamlined furniture, wooden floors, glass elements, and Oriental rugs. Unique architectural details, such as high-vaulted ceilings in the first-floor rooms and exposed-wood beams in the loft spaces, add charm to the rooms. The third-floor lofted bedrooms are accessed by open staircases and have a low ceiling, but make for interesting spaces with their angled walls and small attic windows. All rooms have flat-screen TVs and minibars, along with electric tea kettles (but no coffeemakers); some add sofa beds. Bathrooms have mosaic tiles in a gray or yellow-orange color, plus toiletries and hairdryers. Most have shower/tub combos, though the top-floor Family Rooms have walk-in showers.

Features

Excellent free breakfast buffet and outdoor terrace

There are few amenities to speak of at this small property. However, guests praise the free buffet breakfast of hot and cold items served in a bright dining room where coffee is available all day. During the warmer months, breakfast can be taken on the seasonal outdoor terrace with pretty garden views. Unsurprisingly, the monastery next door -- with its historic architecture and ancient libraries -- is a main attraction for guests. Pets are allowed for free, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Bike rentals are available on-site, and there's limited parking for a fee.
