Protected by police security checkpoints on account of multiple nearby embassies, there's a peaceful tranquillity to the neat cobbled streets leading to the Appia's entrance. Set within former Bourgeoise houses dating back several centuries, the hotel's architecture is lovely, as are the classically elegant interiors. The lobby itself is small but inviting, with stone steps and a few floral-printed gilded chairs giving period touches. The lobby bar has a similar vibe with its red-and-gold gilded chairs, burgundy banquettes, and old-fashioned wall clock. The most striking feature is the 12th-century breakfast hall with a vaulted wood-beam ceiling, terra-cotta brick floor, and gold chandelier. Overlooking picturesque nearby buildings, the courtyard terrace has a verdant lawn with patio seating and umbrellas for shade. The Appia mostly welcomes vacationing couples, plus a few diplomats, who rave about the consistently friendly and helpful staff.

Removed from the downtown buzz but still centrally located on the western side of Mala Strana (Lesser Town), the Appia is a one-minute walk from a bus stop and a 15-minute walk to the nearest Malostranska metro and tram stations. It's next to the historic Nerudova Street linking Prague Castle (an eight-minute walk) to the Charles Bridge, which is a similar distance. Reaching some sights requires a bit of an uphill walk. The German Embassy is a one-minute walk away, while the U.S. embassy is three minutes and British embassy is six minutes. Both the Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock can be reached on foot in 20 minutes. A 20-minute tram ride can take travelers to the Palladium shopping center. The hotel lacks a restaurant, but there are numerous options in the immediate area. Vaclav Havel Airport is a 25-minute cab ride away or 45 minutes by public transit.

Rooms mimic the rest of the interior spaces with a traditionally elegant design. Starting at 32 square meters (344 square feet), they're spacious for European standards, and those with kitchenettes or living areas have an apartment feel. Parquet wood floors and pale blue or green walls combine with floral prints and old-fashioned wood and wicker furniture. Floral artwork and thick gold curtains complete the homey, traditional look. Standard furnishings include wardrobes, desks, dining sets, flat-screen satellite TVs, minibars, and both Nespresso machines and kettles. Some add small kitchenettes with electric burners. Also provided are free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and safes.

A handful of rooms have charming stone wall-enclosed patios. Suites have living areas and sofa beds, while the 84-square-meter (904-square-foot) Grand Apartment has two bedrooms, a large living room, dining are,a and kitchenette. Bathrooms across the board are outfitted with beige marble tiling, and have shower/tub combos, bidets, Oliva toiletries, hairdryers, bathrobes, and slippers.

Features at the Appia are limited, but the hotel hasn't scrimped on quality. Served in the Ancient Hall breakfast room, the free buffet breakfast is rich and raved about. It includes cooked items, fresh breads, pastries, Bircher muesli, cheeses, and fruits, and traditional beverages. Unfortunately, the restaurant only serves breakfast, but the space can be used for functions. Coffee and croissants are always available in the lobby, while free afternoon tea is provided on weekends. There are no wellness facilities except for a sauna, and use of it requires a fee. Private parking also comes at a cost, however, Wi-Fi is free throughout.
