Bottom Line

This upscale boutique hotel offers an intimate experience near Prague Castle in Lesser Town. The property is housed in a 15th-century mansion that’s decorated in an opulent Baroque style, highlighted by crystal chandeliers, hand-painted ceilings, and gold-leaf furniture. It offers only eight guest rooms, all of which are spacious and decorated in the luxurious style seen throughout the property, with beautiful marble bathrooms that have heated floors. Special touches include private butlers, valet parking, an excellent free breakfast, and a daily wine and cheese reception -- but the hotel has no actual restaurant or bar. A small fitness room, sauna, and whirlpool are on-site. Rates are competitive, though for something with on-site dining, travelers might want to check out the luxury Golden Well, which has a rooftop restaurant with terrific views.

Scene

A 15th-century mansion with opulent decor, but a warm and friendly ambiance

This beautiful mansion that dates back to the 15th-century is a treat for history buffs and art lovers alike. It exudes Baroque opulence that’s highlighted by crystal chandeliers, fine antiques, and gold-leaf furniture with rich red upholstery. Coffered ceiling panels are hand-painted in damask patterns, and beautiful hardwood floors are accented by Oriental-style rugs. Many guests deem this boutique property stunning, and it’s not hyperbole. Despite its museum-like spaces, this quiet tourist hotel encourages friendly interaction among its clientele. The breakfast room has a large communal table, and the daily wine and cheese receptions are often chatty affairs where guests share their travel adventures. If privacy is desired, there are plenty of places to sit quietly and take in the splendid setting.

Location

In quiet Lesser Town neighborhood near Prague Castle

The hotel is located in the Mala Strana District (Lesser Town) on the left bank, within walking distance of Charles Bridge and Prague Castle. It's an appealing location that's close to attractions, but it tends to be quieter compared to the bustling Old Town or New Town areas. A subway station and tram stops are nearby, and the neighborhood has many cafes, restaurants, and shops. - Five-minute walk to Malaostranska metro station

  • Eight-minute walk to Charles Bridge
  • Nine-minute walk to Kafka Museum
  • 11-minute walk to Prague Castle
  • 15-minute walk to the Old Jewish Cemetery
  • 20-minute walk to Old Town Square (11 minutes by public transportation)
  • 23-minute walk to Wenceslas Square (11 minutes by public transportation)
  • 17 minutes by public transportation to Prague Main Railway Station
  • 20-minute drive to Vaclav Havel Airport (40 minutes by public transportation)

Rooms

Spacious, regal rooms with minibars and marble bathrooms with heated floors

Like the hotel’s public spaces, the seven Deluxe Rooms and the Decastello Suite are individually decorated in an opulent Baroque style that has a striking wow factor. They feature crystal chandeliers, period antiques or quality reproductions, and hand-painted, coffered ceiling panels. Fine hardwood floors are accented by Oriental rugs, and one of the Deluxe Rooms we saw had hand-painted murals that covered multiple walls. Crimson and gold damask bedspreads and drapes enhance the traditional motif. Attention to detail is obvious, as the rooms are clean and maintained to a high standard. They're spacious and include desks and small dining tables with upholstered chairs. The high ceilings and large windows keep them from feeling dark and stuffy. The beautiful marble bathrooms are roomy and elegant and have an appropriately old-fashioned look with details like crystal sconce lighting and bidets. They feature heated floors and shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads and clear glass half-doors. L'Occitane toiletries, robes, and slippers are supplied. Other standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, safes, and minibars. Wi-Fi is free, and the soft drinks and water included in the minibars are free. Some rooms on the top floor have balconies with seating and lovely views, but the balconies are shared. The suite features a sleeper sofa and kitchenette with sink, cooktop, and utensils.

Features

Personal butlers, free breakfast, wine and cheese reception, and wellness facilities

This upscale boutique hotel sets a high standard for service, starting with private butlers that act as personal concierges for everything from theater tickets to running errands. On the downside, the hands-on valet parking is the only hotel-provided parking option, and it’s expensive. Private cars are available, and guests booking through the hotel receive free one-way airport or train station transfers. The Alchymist serves an excellent hot breakfast buffet that’s free, as well as offering a free wine and cheese reception every afternoon. Room service can also be requested. No lunch or dinner is available, but discounts are offered for meals at the Aquarius restaurant that’s located in the hotel's sister property, Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa. It’s a five-minute walk away, and free transfers are offered between the two properties. Guests also can book treatments at the Grand Hotel’s spa. There is a small, spa-like room on-site that includes a sauna and whirlpool. A fitness room is also in the hotel, decadently furnished with a chandelier and an Oriental rug, but it’s small and sparsely equipped. Valet dry cleaning and laundry are available, and Wi-Fi is free. Guests are offered a free drink at registration. Elevator service is available to all three floors.
