Bottom Line

The 62-room Tryp Porto Centro is a mid-range property situated outside the historic center of Porto. It's close to Rua de Santa Catarina and a 15-minute walk from the Via Catarina shopping district. The Marques Metro station is also within a seven-minute walk. Simple, pleasant rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi, and some have fitness machines. Family-friendly rooms have bunk beds for the youngsters. A free breakfast buffet is served daily, and drinks are poured in the lobby lounge. There's also on-site parking, and three event spaces. As an alternative, travelers who would like to be closer to the river and historic attractions could check out the Hotel do Norte, where rates are a bit lower, though decor is more tired.

Scene

Small and simple mid-range option popular with tour groups, businesspeople, families, and couples

Guests checking into this four-story hotel are greeted by a crisp blue and white reception desk depicting Portuguese buildings. The adjacent bar is similarly outfitted, but these are the most distinctive features of the otherwise basically simple hotel. The rest of the lobby is mostly white, with a couple of black seats where guests can pause for a moment. It's not really a place for hanging out, but guests do gather in the lobby bar for a more social setting. The hotel is popular with tour groups, which can create a chaotic scene at times, but it's usually a quiet place. With its reasonable rates and proximity to the metro, it also draws businesspeople, families, and couples.

Location

Close to Marques Metro station, Rua de Santa Catarina, and shopping, but far from Ribeira Square

This hotel is situated outside of Porto's historic center, near Rua de Santa Catarina and a 15-minute walk from the Via Catarina shopping district. The area has a limited number of bars and restaurants, but the Marques Metro station is within a seven-minute walk from the hotel. Ribeira Square and its surrounding attractions are 30 minutes away by public transportation, or guests who like to walk can get there in about 35 minutes on foot. For soccer enthusiasts, Dragao Stadium can be reached in 25 minutes on public transportation, or about the same amount of time walking. Plan on about 20 minutes to reach Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport by car, or about 50 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Simple, pleasant rooms with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes

Rooms are simple and pleasant, with wood floors, unadorned white bed linens, tan accent walls, and clean-lined light wood furniture. Standard Rooms are available with a double or two twin beds, and Family Rooms have bunk beds as well. Some rooms are equipped with fitness machines. Flat-screen TVs with cable sit atop desks. Other amenities include air-conditioning, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Basic bathrooms are tiled and offer bidets, hairdryers, toiletries, towel warmers, and shower/tub combos. Some rooms have nice views of the city, while others look out onto neighboring buildings.

Features

Breakfast, room service, lobby bar, event spaces, and freebies like limited on-site parking and Wi-Fi

This simple hotel is light on features. A breakfast buffet is served daily in a bright breakfast room with floor-to-ceiling windows providing lots of natural light. Breakfast selections include cereals, fruits, yogurt, breads, pastries, and hot items. Room service is available. There's also a bar in the lobby serving drinks and light fare. The Marques Restaurant is available for private bookings only. The hotel's three event spaces can accommodate social and business gatherings for up to 100 people. Some parking is available on-site for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
